LongHairBiker there is one thing I will say...it sounds like it was a blessing you did not marry these people...they were not good enough for you. To walk away that easy...no they were not good enough. A divorce would have cost allot more than a wedding. Divorce is a very hard pill to swallow especially when kids are involved. |

Well somehow I think you are better off that they refused to marry than divorce you but if someone crapped out on me at the last minute I would sue them for half the expenses that you both agreed on. If you spent a lot of money on a ceremony that was a choice and probably wasn't such a great one but if you have your family and friends together party on. Sometimes in life you have to turn lemons into lemonaid.
Marriage is a social contract with the community as much as it is each other. They now officially recognize you as a partnership and as partners you get specific guaranteed rights and responsibilities. Tax breaks, medical privileges, and family rights are far superior to shacking up. And when you divorce ranther than just split up things are suppose to be split equitably and debts assigned. There is a clear beginning and a clear end in marriage and divorce but when people live together that is always up for grabs. The only thing I see that is inately unfair in marriage as our society practices it is that paternity for all children concieved during the marriage are the joint responsibility of the father even if it is not in fact his child. I see that being challenged in the courts in the very near future and the child being the responsibility of the biological father when the mother can be compelled to name him. If she does not then she has the full responsibility to provide. I think that will be more for a childs rights to claim his genetic identitiy rather than the societies right to pass off it responsibility to support a bastard child( sorry a legal term not a moral one). That I see more and more courts awarding custody to fathers as much as mothers and their rights more and more protected specificlly in marriage I can not see how a man would risk and out of wedlock pregnancy and having no rights. I still haven't figured out how come more varieties of birth control are available to men but that is their reproductive choices and and since men could control the research funding and and the market incentive with their input I have to say they don't seriously want a change from the status quoe. |
