Topic: wtf does "down to earth" mean??? | |

Op, because you are not down to earth you will never understand connotations.
Let it go, it has been explained to you several times you refuse to accept anything that cannot be proven by science. Language isn't always black and white, if you can't accept that, it's your loss. |

Instead of worrying about the meaning of "down to earth" why not taket the time to get to know someone that says that on thier profile?? You could find out first hand what "down to earth" means yourself! That sounds pretty 'down to earth'. |

I thought it was code for LOW maintenance. kinda yes I would say... Down to earth: you are okay with a nice dinner out being McDonald. Be heaven forbid you ever want to real dinner out. Sitting around watching the game with his buddies all the time and never letting them know you really hate that sport. And never letting the boyfriend know that for once, just once, you would like to go out to a movie for a change. Not down to earth: Wanting to occasionally do something you like, together. Ever asking them to do anything that involves any effort or money or time on their part, away from their buddies and normal routine. But maybe I'm just jaded.... |

I kinda meant low maintenance as in doesn't carry a coach purse or wear a big diamond ring. |

Hey I dig, if a certain category won't understand the term "down to earth," I dig, and I hope it isn't used except by those who have already excluded those who have already excluded certain brain-types. Hmm... Maybe it means nothing then, for the general public? (i.e. productively) I didn't exclude you sugar, but I'm so down to earth I realized you didn't see things outside the box so I explained it to you in your terms. I'm not insulting you, you're highly intelligent. But I'm willing to bet you don't paint, write poetry or sing... Nothing wrong with that, you are who you are. I like your reply. It's to say, though, that a term is valid only if you "paint, write, poetry[sic] or sing..." It seems to me one's language should be meaningful to all in order to maximize communication. I never said that YOU misread what I did say. (again in your language) that you see things as concrete, black and white and this term is not a black and white issue. What I consider to be "down to earth" is not what Jill or you or others may see as down to earth. The definition as Tina stated is the definition, however it's connotation to everyone may be different. It doesn't make anyone wrong, it makes them human. I'm going to go out on a limb here and go on to say that not only do you not paint, sing or write, you also only wear solid color clothing or with a slight stripe, your alarm goes off at the same time everyday and you do not believe in magic. I absolutely agree that ideas are all about greys. Language, on the other hand, depends on constants. I will contend that proclaiming something means something given even waht we've seen tonight means it is not a useful term to use. Why not fall on others? And if so, I would like to hear those replacements! that ain't down to earth |

I think it means..... (Hey, did she just wave at me? I think that woman at the top just waved at me. And said my name. I'm pretty sure) I think it means 'boring and non-adventurous'. But it could just mean they are unable to obtain escape velocity... perhaps due to excess baggage or an inordinate amount of sucking by the earth. Pretty much what I meant by 'no class'. -shrugs- |
