religion,politics,love,dating,sex.......
you have your beliefs,and I have mine...... I accept that even though I may not always agree.

lets face it, does anyone think they are going to change anyones mind......one day they will say "wow you were right all along!!"

what "I" get out of a good debate is that once in awhile, i'll read something that is totally out-of-the-box to my way of thinking and i'll say to myself, 'wow, i never thought of THAT!'. it's the personal growth that interests me, over and above anything else.

I agree with the idea of stretching your own ideas and ideals... I don't like to argue about an issue though, so the debate has to be "nice" -

You know sometimes a person just needs to vent. I hate to say it, but there are a lot of strangers on here who are willing to read some inane stuff. If they wish to pass judgement on some silly thing I said just to vent (or sometimes just to be funny) well, so be it. The thing is, I might feel a little better, or god forbid, I might make someone else feel better, by showing my stupidity. Either way, there's nothing wrong with it.

Not all of the arguements or fights a bad either. A harsh discourse can be stimulating for the mind. This is the kind of stuff that will keep you fresh at work, maybe you'll wow the boss with you debating skills. Some the topics of debate are also good for conversation when your meeting people in your neighborhood. Who hasn't had a conversation that had "I was reading this arguement on the blogs about ____" and continued from there. Some of the crazier stuff can be amusing as hell.

Look there can be more to good solid fighting than just making someone feel bad. Heck I love to argue, I think it's the sarcastic streak in me. Nothing wrong with it.

I agree that debating issues can be a good thing, we can all learn something, but when it turns into something intended to make "someone feel bad" or to belittle or bully, then it's no longer a debate and IMHO, just not cool to do.

I've changed my mind on many occasions, changed my thought process about things, if they were presented in a manner that is non combative.

But you're right, most of the time, people don't change.

I'd hate to think that I've never changed or capable of change...for I have and I am. I am no where near the same person I was at 20, 30, or 40, not just because I got older but in some cases I changed!

Debates can sometimes be good ( or bad) I read with interest most topics posted in the forums, and yes, sometimes I add my two pennies worth, but for the best part, I love a banter and have joined in the "silliness" just for a laugh ( after all life can be boring some days)
