If a person is a compulsive liar who fools themselves into believing something is true then they'd fool the lie detector. On the flip side, someone who just has a tendency to feel guilty even when they've done nothing wrong might fail when in fact they are telling the truth. For those reasons, no. Seriously though, if someone is a bad liar, you can usually tell without one of those things.

Exactly if a person is lacking in conscience and empathy....these tests would show nothing.

No, because there are "atypical responders"
Like myself.
Took one for a job interview, results were inconclusive.
They coundn't determine a base line for physical responses that were clearly "truth" answers
name, date of birth, residence,occupation.
So they were unable to detect " deceptive" answers.
I didn't pass, I didn't fail.
I didn't get the job either.

No lie detectors in divorce court...or any other court. The only people who attest to thier reliability are polygraphers (police). All other professionals say that they are inaccurate at best. And, if they can be "beaten" by anyone at all (and they can), they should not be used at all.

If you tell a lie, they say you lied. If you tell the truth, they call it "inconclusive". How can you win with that? This not from personal experience...never had one..never will.
