Topic: I saved this for this day | |
---|---|
I never knew my father. He was in Vietnam when I was a baby and he and my mother divorced while he was there. When he returned to the states we had moved far away, Remember there were no computers or cell phone". I spent my whole life dreaming of what it would be like to have a dad. I heard a little here or there about him but that’s all. The last place I had ever heard of him being was Fort Bragg North Caroline. I graduated high school at 17 years old and I joined the 82nd airborne so I could be stationed at Fort Bragg. I fully expected to step off the plane and find my father. That never happened because Ft. Bragg has 300,000 people stationed there. After my 3+ years at Ft. Bragg I met and married a woman that lived in Rockingham North Carolina. I soon lived there and took a job as a soft drink salesman then a beer salesman then wood products salesman. I was now 23 years old. One day a salesman approached me and asked me if I could cover some of his key accounts while he was on vacation. This took me to Augusta Georgia. At one stop a man placed a huge order and I had to get it approved by the purchasing agent. The agent signed the order and as I walked out of his office I looked at the name and it read "Dow William Walker" I froze in my tracks and turned around and looked at the man and said "My father's name was Dow William Walker" He looked at me and said "Is your mother named Betty" Tears started flowing and he jumped from behind his desk and we stood there hugging and crying. When I called my company and explained all of this to them they told me to take a few days off to be with him. We discovered some pretty strange things also. When he got out of the military he went to work for a soft drink company (so did I) He left that and went to work for a beer company (so did I) he left that and went to work for a wood products company (so did I) He lived in Richmond count Georgia I lived in Richmond count North Carolina. His second wife's was raised in New Jersey 3 miles from where my second wife is from. My father and I are extremely close to this day and he will be here (Myrtle Beach) tomorrow to spend the week with me. I love that man. Happy fathers day

God definitely had it in store for you two to meet. This was very inspiring as to what desires we have in our heart .. are met. No matter the time that elapses between the two dynamics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks all and it still chokes me up as well. I forgot to add, when I returned to my job on the following Monday I was met with the press. This story was published the following Sunday's headline followed with a 2 page article. (I guess that was my 15 minutes of fame lol)
