If someone does me a favor such as dog sitting, or helping me move...I usually buy them a little thank you. I guess it depends on the favor.

i send cards out on holidays if someone does something for my son i plant the idea for him to send a thank you letter

Yes! Especially big favors...like the friends who helped me move! Also had them over for dinner...but I didn't do the cooking. I ordered out so as to be sure they had a good meal (I'm just a so-so cook).
