You listen to them, you try to advise them to keep active, which is difficult because depressed people want to stay at home. Keep trying to prompt them to go to a movie or something. It can be difficult at times but if it continues, I would advise them to talk with a professional.

How do you deal with a friend or friends that is/are depressed? Do you find that spending time with someone depressed brings you down? Last year I tried to help one of my friends but I found that all my energy was being zapped by her. It definately brought me down. |

is the person seriously depressed or just blue? Is there a possibility they are suicidal? Or do they just need to blow off steam? let them talk if they need to talk but watch for keywords like can't cope, tired of dealing with this, wish it would just be over. While not direct thoughts they can be keys that the person may indeed be having suicidal thoughts if not intent. If this is the case they need more than a friend they need professional guidance. And should be urged to talk to a professional even if it is just calling a free hotline. And never take phrases like I wish I were dead as just expressions as usually they are a cry for help.

Many of my friends have helped me through some rough times, not clinical depression but not something someone would gladly go through with a friend. Now, I just can't abandon my friend who is now going through a true depression. Yeah, sometimes it brings me down, and I certainly have some anxiety over the tragic potential the illness has (!)...but I'm planning on getting my friend back once the depression lifts. It's worth it to me to stick it out with him.
