It is fascinating because with internet this artform may be developed and we do not have the luxury of seeing the handwriting, the signature, feeling the weight or quality of the paper, or its texture, sometimes the scent... or perfume.
Do people even get love letters? Are we now in the synthetic world of virtual reality where texts and emails take the place of such memorabilia... Our grandparents may have a shoebox of love letters with blue ribbons or shoelaces tying the inksoaked parchments... What will we leave as a legacy behind? Sometimes we get lazy and use a pre-written card, and just add our names... I only buy blank cards, and write my own 'love' message... even the words Happy Birthday are always in blank cards, as for me I feel I prefer the words to be my own... What can you share? |

I have old love letters from my soon to be ex husband..a few cards from ex boyfriends. Some things that didnt end bad, just wrong place, wrong type thing...The letter from the "ex" was written the day he beat me, acting all sweet..geez...oh well..time heals and we move on...thank goodness.

uneek, you are posing a question for all teachers to answer in their own way; where and how are we going to leave our mark?
Being able to write is a very tough and complex task, even when the subject is tangible. To be able to write a love letter is an art all to itself. I know that even the most poorly written note is better that a printed card from the mini-mart, but sometimes being able to express deep, heartfelt, untangible, emotions can be overwhelming for the layman. I am not the best writer, but think I can hold my own, and find being able to put my soul down on paper for my love a quest for perfection. There are too many thoughts to put down when writting a love note, that some might think of it as writtng "War and Peace." But, all that aside, it is lost on today's youth, the ability to express oneself in words. I have all of my grandfathers love letters from WWII and they are some of the most romantic pieces of literature I have ever held. They were more than simple "I love you" and showed alot more thought than just thinking about you. They were about heartfelt longing and true melancholy about the situation. I wish I could express myself in such a fashion. |

If my house were on fire, my stash of correspondence would be one of the first things I'd grab ... words, handwritten ones, from people I've loved, are gold to me. Thanks for sharing your appreciation for the lost art of letter writing with me/us! I have an antique suitcase full of 'treasures' ... all bound with ribbon (by author) and from time to time when I'm feeling sentimental and melancholy I will drag it out and take a walk down memory lane. It is definitely a lost art form and one I miss very much ...

I have a huge paper bag full of old letters that me and my ex would write back and forth in the course of 5yrs and him being incarcerated about a dozen times...I left him 6mnths b4 he was suppose to get out of prison b/c I was tired of his lies and always putting me on the back burner...I still have all the letters...Is this a bad thing?? What do you suppose this means?? I can't seem to get rid of them...

It just means you're not ready to let him go completely yet ... nothin' wrong with that (unless you're obsessing over them and re-living the 'good times' of the relationship thru them).
IMO, hanging on to letters from him is better than hanging on to an unhealthy relationship - when you were ready and able to move out of that situation you DID ... and when you are ready and able to leave the memories of him behind too, you WILL! Trust yourself. |

I still have everything that Ryan wrote to me. His parents might have what I wrote to him but I don't know if they looked at stuff they packed from his apartment when they cleaned it out or not. Someday I might ask them, but it's been almost years since he died and I still feel that they aren't ready to handle the emotions that would accompany that request.
