The history of the Pentagram and Pentacle

The pentagram (the five pointed star without a circle) was probably discovered as a result of astronomical research in the Euphrates-Tigris region about 6000 years ago.

What is known with certainty is that the pentagram played an important role as a sign on the official seal of the city of Jerusalem during the period 300-150 B.C.

The Pentagram has been called Solomon's Seal or Solomon's shield in medieval Jewish mysticism.

Because of its use as a shield, it has been used as a mystical sign of protection from the enemy or from evil.

(The five pointed star without crossing lines also had already appeared in pre-Columbian America, although not in the form of a pentagram, but simply a five pointed star with double outlined edges.)

The Pentacle:

The five pointed Star with a circle around it:

This ideogram has no meaning by itself. A filled version of the sign is used as a symbol of war in the United States and appears on tanks and fighter jets.

This sign can be called a design-iconic symbol for the planet Venus. This planet is the only one in our system that can clearly be identified with a graphic structure unambiguously derived from a plotting of its astronomical movements in space. I have more information for the reason for this if you would like it.

Historically it is an astrological sign.

This may be a very stupid question so please forgive my ignorance....

If Satanists don't worship the devil, what is a "Satanist"? And....who is LeVey?

Antone LeVey wrote a book and founded the Church of Satan. He is basically an atheist and does not believe in the devil or God.

Why he named his movement "Satanism" was strictly symbolic and more of a rebellion of religious dogma and superstition.

He had quite a sense of humor in my opinion.

the pentagram is an upsidedown pentacle, which is an earth sign in wicca, some "black" (I say that in quotes cause im a chaote and think such terms r limiting) magick uses the pentagram much like an upsidedown cross is used in real satanism, but te reason the pentagram is associated with satanism is because during the middleages christians did not distinguish between witches (bad and good) whose beliefs do not coincide with christianity and satanists whose beliefs do (of which there were precious few prior 2 lavey and crowley) so the pentagram (and the pentacle used interchangeably) became the christian symbol for "Evil"

So, how does Satanism theory difer from atheist theory? (Again forgive my ignorace but an "Athiest" doesn't believe in a higher power, right?)

The term "pentagram" refers to the five pointed star made up of strait lines that cross.

It does not have to be "upside down."

The pentagram inside of a circle is called a "pentacle."

The reversed pentacle points to the earth and is used by the modern Church of Satan to represent the base nature of man.

A symbol only represents what the persons using it want it to represent.

It is all sacred geometry.

you may want to check those facts again...Solomon's Seal, also adopted by King David, was a 6 pointed star, acutaly two triangels one inverted the other right side up....
The "upside" down pentagram was introduced during the witch burning days as a symbolic of the "goat-head" or "devil" which women were accused of worshiping.

WOW...I am feeling so ignorant today...but learning so much....Please give me a brief discription of Scientoloty...the only thing I know about it is that it is the "religion" that Tom Cruise is.

AND I am still curious to know the differance between a "Satanist" and an "Athiest" if neither believe in God or Devil.

What is your source?

I do not have any other source at my disposal, and I have not researched Carl G. Liungman much either.

This is a dumb question maybe but my friend and I are having a disagreement. I say the pentagram isn't just about the devil. He won't belive me.

I don't know why people get these thoughts into their head and won't get rid of them. So I am asking here.

Is the pentagram used only for devil worship in religions?

nope

Six pointed star: HEXAGRAM

The hexagram is sometimes known as the shield of David or the Magon David.

According to the late Danish semiotician S.T. Achen, the Muslims refer to it as Solomon's seal, whereas E Zehren points out that the sign on Solomon's seal was the five pointed star, the pentagram.

The hexagram is frequently used in the magic formulas in the ancient book of witchcraft, the Key of Solomon.

It (hexagram) was first and formoste used by alchemists in the Middle ages as a general symbold representing the art of alchemy and secondly as a sign for water (downward facing triangle) and fire (upward facing triangle).

Together, these two signs (triangles) formed the symbol for fire water or the essence, or spiritus, in wine, alcohol.

It was also the sign for the quintessence, the fifth element.

The Jews in Europe used the six pointed star during the Middle ages on their banners and prayer shawls. When they were repressed by the Church and the princes, however, a pointed hat and later, a yellow ring, were used to distinguish them, not the hexagram.

The hexagram became more popular during the nineteenth century and was used to decorate newly built synagogues. The founders of the Zionist movement adopted the hexagram as a rallying symbol in their attempts to create a Jewish nationals state in Palestine.
