If they can't cure lung cancer by the time I have it, I don't want to be alive on this poorly funded orb of no priorities.

Why are there so many women (and I suppose, men) who still smoke? Seems like whenever I see someone on here who looks interesting to me, they turn out to be a smoker (which I am not). And please tell me...who smokes "occasionally"? Either you are a smoker or you're not!!!! Ok, I know I'm gonna hear it from the smokers now!! I used to smoke. Started when I was drunk one night and someone handed me a cigarette. I felt such a high that I loved it. Ended up wanting to smoke more when I drank...even had some here and there when I didn't. It got to the point where I'd smoke one cigarette after work and then 3-4 on Friday and 3-4 on Saturday. I loved it, and I still do. If there was a completely healthy cigarette, I'd be a smoker. However, I knew I was damaging myself...and had to stop. It took a life-threatening accident which had nothing to do with smoking show me that life is precious and I shouldn't slowly destroy mine. Haven't touched a cigarette since that day and it's been over a year no. No cravings anymore either. I still don't agree with smoking bans like the one they passed in Illinois. I know that when I walk into places like bars or nightclubs that the smoke is part of the deal. For the waitresses and bartenders who fear their health, they should think about another line of work. I think we have a right to designate areas as "non-smoking", but we don't have a right to tell businesses that they can't have smoking period...especially when those smokers make up most of their customers. I live 20 minutes from Illinois and have heard alot of talk about it. I believe that the ban goes overboard like what you have mentioned. I also believe that smoking should be allowed in the casinos and the prisons. I can't imagine what the prisons were like when they got rid of the cigarettes. Yikes. |

Well, as far as it affecting businesses, while I don't frequent a lot of bars, I do go to Buffalo Wild Wings from time to time. You can still hardly get in the place on any weekend so if it's afecting their business, it must be in a positive manner! Now, I'm not one who would call for laws to ban smoking but I do have to admit, I enjoy being in a place without my eyes burning and without the smell of stale tobacco smoke when I'm eating. |

Buffalo Wild Wings is a more family-oriented spot. Some places won't be affected.
I remember when my father had a restaurant, he lost 25% of his business when the ban came into play. So did many other places. Plus I don't like how some areas now have crowds of people outside smoking, tossing their butts into the street. That's environmentally bad as well. I think they should just have left it to the businesses to decide. When I heard complaints from anti-smokers that businesses who choose to be smoke-free end up going out of business, I merely replied "the people have spoken". When I had to go to City Hall and sit in on the hearings, I just saw those in favor of it, and they were definitely the types who never go to bars or clubs. So if they don't even go period, what right do they have to tell someone they can't enjoy a cig? I'd rather have them indoors smoking in designated areas as opposed to outside businesses, making a mess with the butts and chaos. I still wonder if one drunken night the smokers on Division Street in Chicago will turn into a riot. |

I don't smoke but I still see a lot of people that do. Where I live you can still smoke at the casinos. I really like the fact that you can go to any public place in Illinois and be smoke free! |

I smoke because the alternative would be a padded room somewhere for me. I make every effort to be a considerate smoker... recognizing the smoking areas, not smoking around someone who does not like it and children. I don't throw my butts on the ground. If there is no ash tray available I field strip them and dispose of them. I don't smoke in the car and throw my butts out the window....this irritates me to no end
