my best friend, one of the prettiest girls i know. txted me today to tell me she thinks she's ugly. She doesnt believe me or anyone else when we tell her other wise. She was telling me all the things she wished she could change(Looks wise), and I being the best friend that i am, told her all the postivies about her(Beautywise). And I know most girls/women think that they are ugly at one point or another.. and i was just wondering is it the world we live in that makes us think this?

All too often we judge beauty by what we see in the mirror, however physical beauty is greatly overshadowed by inward ugliness. Perhaps your friend feels ugly on the inside, and that is what she sees in the mirror.

Unfortunately so.

Yup -- that's a prevailing mindset. You can never be skinny enough, or tall enough, or rich enough, or smart enough, or good enough. And as long as people try to live up to adjectives, they'll never get anywhere.

World with a beauty expectation is a world that fails, a world that see's inbetween the lines and reads the fine print is a world that over-analyzes...the world that is perfect does not exist, but if it persay did...we would not be apart of it. |

Is it possible that she may be going through depression?

Media controls the way we all think. Remember Britany. Remember Elvis. Remember The Beatles.

All I know is, I'm not beautiful or pretty to everyone. But each day when I wake up I know that I am to myself. Everyone has their own ideals to what beauty is.

I think we need to stop looking to others to define how we feel about ourselves. It is sad that so many don't. We all have done it, but it gets reinforced too heavily.

Is it possible that she may be going through depression? I highly doubt it..she's a natrally happy person. I've Almost never seen her sad. and i know what the first signs of depression are. and she doesnt have them |

Yes- the world we live in throws crap at us all the time..

YES IT IS. that or maybe she didn't get attention when she was a child and is starving for it all day and night long. either way, if shes beautiful and cant see it in the mirror then she needs to take a step back and really get to know her body... tell her to stand nude in front of a full leanth mirror by herself and really look herself up and down; and say out loud, write down if need be..what she likes about her body and why and what she doesn't and why. this way she gets in tuch with herself. you know it might help her.

Its sad really. Everyone can look around see people who look better than them, but they never look at themselves and see the same beauty
