because it represents bleak...gloomy....mournful...exaggerated; bright yellow just wouldn't convey the same message.

it can mean many things. like all popular cultures, there are "real" people and posers. i've known a few who were into it and cool, while the mass majority were just nerds who wanted to form their own cool group
