Socrates gave a seemingly convincing answer to this old question. In such a heartbreaking scenario, my instinct would be to save my child first, as their young age and vulnerability would likely make them more at risk in the water. However, I would also consider the possibility of quickly rescuing my wife and then returning for our child if time allows. Ultimately, the decision would be made in the heat of the moment, with the goal of saving as many lives as possible.
