We are educating everyone to a standard compulsory level of a school degree. The expected result of this (expected not by government sledge-headed bureaucrats, mind you) is that there will be less and less good paying jobs available for that level. In other words, we are tuning everyone into an ordinary, nothing exciting, bland type worker. The pay follows. I buy only German and Japanese made cars. This is because I expect quality, and, because I wish American industry the best. An American car has no quality. Unfortunately, this is true. Yes, this nation still makes Saleen and Mustang, but the mainline autos are crap. This, by the way, was predicted (even) by a writer, Arthur Heily (sp?), in his work "Wheels". Not going into details of why there is no quality, it is sufficient to say that in most cathegories of goods, if one is seeking for quality, he won't be looking at "made in usa" goods. What exactly prevents anyone from any walk of life from attaining any professional level he may desire? Rich or poor, in America today, not only it is achievable, you will also be pushed to reach whatever it is you want. Truthfully, the base level of education is not even just high school anymore - it seems to exist somewhere between high school and an associates from a local JC. Truth be told, even the bachelor's degree market has become so saturated, very few positions above mindless, manual labor will even look at you without one. Even then, it's not what the degree is, only that you have one to show you can commit. |

So, not wanting to hijack the other thread (and not even sure if this was mentioned there)... Does anyone realize the implications of the "revised" Chrysler that the government is hoping to develop through Chapter 11? I'll give you the only line that matters: 55% ownership by the UAW. That line right there is why the company will NEVER again be largely profitable. The workers for the company run the company. They set the pay, the benefits, the executive salary and bonuses. They will run the company into the ground. While a lot of that sound like a good system, just try to get someone into the CEO position that is worthwhile when they can be ousted just for not supporting union demands. This is by far one of the stupidest things I've ever heard in my life. I seriously hope Fiat bails. There is no potential in here anymore. Why are the workers not compitent to help lead their own company? Are all workers ignorant? Are all workers too greedy to make sound decisions? If all of this is true then no American is fit to contribute their imput into how this country is running, right? Ideally no, but a big part of the downfall of the American auto industry is the fault of the UAW. I'm not against unions, but sometimes they too can be become too greedy. BS! You've just been brainwashed by those intending to push globalization on Americans! How is $27 an hour to assemble parts with full benefits and a pension from day one not excessive? Please, enlighten me how those added costs have nothing to do with why GM and Chrysler are in the shape they are in now. |

Republican party has been a haven for the hatemongers in this country for a long time now. Hatred will always implode those who participate, be they individuals or organizations. Martin luther king Jr was a republican! I was not referring to that far back in our history. During the civil rights movement it was a whole different republican party and also democratic party. Fine, where are the black rights extremists? democrats. they are easily filed under hate mongers. What about the extreme environmentalists that will torch Hummer dealerships? Democrats. Each side has its haters. There is little difference. I will agree with the extremists are everywhere in all walks of life. How much influence and what results from the extremists activities is the issue. The right extremists are far less powerful then you imagine. They just receive a lot of press. It's all an illusion. Not true. If it weren't for them for example we would not have an issue with gay marriage. that is due far more to religion than some single (or even few) right-wing extremists. It is taught to be wrong by just about every major organized religion on earth. Religious zealots are right wing, republican. funny story, in CA, two of the largest groups to vote yes on prop 8 were hispanics and blacks. In case you didn't know, the LA hispanic population tends to be fairly religious and democrat. So does that make them right wing or left wing? Most religiously faithful are or lean republican. white and religious, yes, but you can't make that much of a generalization that all religious folks are republican. hispanics and blacks can be religious too and they by far vote democrat more. |

However, greed on every side pulling at the pot keeps the pot as centered as possible. If the UAW controls the entire company from top to bottom, there is no longer that balance. Greed will follow and they'll take every last bit they can out of that company. not everyone is qualified to do every job. That is why some pay more than others. Can you perform bypass surgery? I know I sure as hell can't, so I stay the hell out of the OR. The average UAW worker has no college education, let alone any real corporate experience. There's a reason the CEO makes so much and it's not just because of greed. You don't get there overnight. input is one thing, unabated control is another. |

Look, Madison, the story wasn't really informative. It was a rant. Unfortunately my interest are more in logic, and mathematics rather than propaganda used to divide this country even further. IMO the whole tea party thing is a first step. People are slow learners, and most of them have a LONG way to go. Right now the right wing happens to be sided a little more with the people. Do i think it's because the majority of them care? Hell no. They are looking to get back into power. This was the case of the left trying to incriminate the Bush administration on his interrogation methods, and starting an illegal war. What's funny is most of these people voted to go to war, and they gave permission to use torture methods for interrogation. It's all just a game no matter what side you are playing on. These tea parties are an awakening for many. Like the torture, and the Iraq war, as much as i don't agree with the reasons people are pushing such things, it is the right thing to push for just the same. Originally i was against the people that were against the Iraq war, yes. I noticed there was a lot of propaganda pushing against what i had personally fought for. But, i have learned from my misconceptions. I have learned how important it is to follow our constitution. Unfortunately both left and right, want to trample it into the ground. Politics is not about who is better - it's about who is a better salesman. Obama sold himself because that is what he's good at. However, many are coming to the realization that all is not what it seemed. The right is in fact aligned more with the people - the people just don't realize it yet. So showmanship and deeper pockets are valued over skill and knowledge? That is an ignorant thought that represents far to many Americans. |

It also creates the preplanned goal of 60 senate seats, if you include Al Franken, which will increase the speed of the runaway train known as government. I'm more worried about the removal of the brake than anything. |

One of my personal favorite people to hear from is the staunch environmentalists that believe we should live "at one with nature" who fully believe that technologies like renewable energy are the answer to every prayer we have. i had one such conversation tonight at class.
The fact of the matter is that as with all things related to economics and every other science, every action has a reaction. There cannot be two winners and no losers. If a resource is given to one, then someone else must go without. This is known as scarcity. being one with nature and leaving no footprint is a myth. If that were the case, we would live very short lives starving in a cold cave; and even that would leave a footprint because all that decaying flesh must go somewhere. You see, a fire changes the atmosphere. Killing a deer will impact the herd. Even eating berries off a bush modify the reproduction of that plant and the eating patterns of the local wildlife. We, in fact, must leave a footprint in order to sustain ourselves. While there is truth to the fact that we are in fact changing the environment (and please, this is not a for/against global warming/cooling/climate change statement), the reasons are often beyond the common understanding of most. You see, with every decision we make, there is a cost. The cost of watching the game may be some time spent working on the car. The additional costs of buying a more expensive name-brand good compared to store brand is what you could purchase with the additional costs. With the environment, there are also other costs - those that we do not directly pay for. The pollution when we drive our cars and buy gas. Nobody pays for the smog. These externalities are the reason the environment is being affected - we do not pay for the loss of trees or the smog and we therefore place no value on them and do not care for them. So what is my point? Well, simply that with every decision, there are external costs we do not pay for or often times, even have to deal with. By moving toward one technology, there are the costs of jobs and profits for the makers of the old. Even using new technologies have external costs. Something like a hydrogen powered car, for example. say a hydrogen car could be made for $20k. Almost anyone could buy one and being that they run on water, and output only water vapor, they seem to be the wet dream of any environmentalist. However, with all the "clean" air comes costs. There are of course the obvious losses in the fossil fuel markets, but what about the reactions caused by the water vapor itself? Look at how unhealthy the air is in LA; all that CO and HC and NOx pollution. imagine if that was replaced with water vapor... the resulting rains would create havoc in southern california. I mean, we have "flooding" and serious mudslides the maybe 5 storms a year we get... california would be come wetter than florida. How's that for climate change? I guess all I'm saying is fully consider all results of the actions you pursue. If you want to dedicate your life to saving the environment, you must think a little bit with your head. No matter what you do, there will be consequences. They often will be a lot of what you want, but there are those actions that will bring out the unexpected and totally undesired. |

Actually, the reason is that preferred stock is in fact a loan that is somewhat backed and allows legal action if unpaid. Common stock is not insured in the least so that essentially moves the money from the secured debt column to the unsecured debt column, effectively freeing more capital. Although, I'm sure there is the desire for power in the decision as well. But like I said, if they go down, we're left holding the bag. Looks like we agree on mechanics of it, and the only difference is that you believe that the government wants to switch from preferred to common stock: -- To amplify the wight of the subsidy they have already given. while I believe that they want to do so: -- To be able to hyperinflate away from debt. We will see what the future will bring... no, we're fully in agreement. I merely pointed out how their "reason" works out - and it does in fact work out mostly like they say it will. Control over the company and voting power on the reserve board is just a perk. |
