The drive is definitely going bad or is gone bad. And no I am not being sarcastic. I had 2 drives die in this same way.

When you hit the eject tray button on the cdrom drive do you have a little light show up on it? Or does the tray even eject?

Can you elaborate on what is happening? You may want to make sure that the hard drive is set to be the first device in the boot order. Then make sure that any other devices are disabled temporarily.
