We would have the Air Force, it's a branch of the military.

General Welfare is the most intentionally misunderstood part of the Constitution. It can literally be used to override any other amendment or protection granted by the Constitution in the convoluted way that the Left interprets it.


No.The "originalists" want the original language to mean exactly what it says. The Amendment makes no mention of a "military". Just an Army. OK. that's a silly example. But what about the rest? You didn't address them.

When you ignore the general welfare clause in favor of the 19 enumerated powers You are saying that all that's required to serve the public's needs are those 19 items. Have you read those items. Just so that everybody knows what we're talking about, let's remind everybody of the only things that Spidercomb thinks are required of the Federal Government to take care of the general welfare of the American people:

To borrow money on the credit of the United States;

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;

To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;

To provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States;

To establish Post Offices and Post Roads;

To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;

To constitute Tribunals inferior to the supreme Court;

To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offenses against the Law of Nations;

To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;

To provide and maintain a Navy;

To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings; And

To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.

this "research" sounds a lot like some of the "Research" the Nazi Germans were conducting.

That is absolutely untrue. It's a leftist claim, which is easily refuted with the Constitution and writing by the founding fathers. Read the 10th Amendment for starts. I should get paid for all the time I spend educating people in these forums..


If the powers of Congress to levy taxes were limited to those 19 enumerated powers, we would have no FBI, no CIA, no NSA, NASA, FEMA, no Department of Homeland Security. None of these independent agencies are grounded in those 19 enumerated powers. We wouldn't even have an Air Force. (An Army Air Corps would be OK, but not and Air Force as an independent agency).

I don't think your efforts to "educate" are bearing much fruit. It's a very incomplete education that ignores the General Welfare clause of the Constitution.

I agree with the statement. I don't see any slavery going on in America, other than wage-slavery.

I take that back. There is a robust trade in sex-slavery going on. These private entrepreneurs seem immune to Government regulation which seeks to stop them from doing whatever they want to do.

The thing that laymen don't understand about pure scientific research is that there scientists every where who want to know the answers to everything. It is not a good idea to influence the direction of a scientist's curiosity according to what the layman finds practical at the time. This is because at some time in the future, Somebody is going to be doing research into something of urgent importance, and they may be needing to find this earlier research as a component of their efforts. This is how science evolves. While I can not imagine where the penis length of gay men could possibly be relevant, I just don't think it's good policy for laymen to be picking and choosing what areas are worth promoting.

I've just been reading up a little on the Austrian School. It seemed to be popular during the late 19th and early 20th century. That was when Europe and America was experiencing huge boom and bust cycles. The School seems to have been in the dog house since the 20s with all recognized economists. even Milton Friedman doesn't think much of it. Only people who want to take us back to the frontier days think it's a good idea.

I pretty much stay away from walmart.


I went into a Walmart a couple of months ago. Damn, their prices are low! I felt like a traitor to America just being in the building and knowing how they get their prices so low.

That's not true. The Constitution only limits the power of Government. It does not enable the power of Government. The nonsense about the 19 enumerated powers has become a cause celebre for the right wing, but it is just that. Nonsense.

Why didn't Walmart just tell their employees that they could just shop at Walmart at greatly reduced prices like other stores? This sounds like an old fashioned company store to me.

A lot can be gleaned from these discussions we have. There are three points I would like to make.

1) Creative hit the nail on the head with this one. It is a wonderful thing to express concern for the millions of poor people in the world who benefit from having jobs. We all want to see that happen worldwide, but to put the interests of foreigners above the interests of Americans seems to me to be borderline treason.

2) The entire right wing pounds on President Obama for not creating enough jobs. I take this as an acknowledgement that there are not enough jobs. At the same time, they excoriate the people who do not have these jobs that don't exist for being lazy, shiftless parasites. The disconnect between these two attitudes seems to me to be, at the least, goofy and schizophrenic.

3) I think that we can all agree that businesses are inherently amoral. Their soul purpose is to make money. Yet, some want to deal with their treatment with their brand of "morality". this makes no sense to me. Contrary to the opinion of a tiny minority of people, businesses are not people. They are not to be dealt with like they are people. It is the people who run and facilitate businesses who need to be treated in a moral fashion. That's what contract administration is all about.

well. Alot has happened on this thread since I was last online. The question of honoring a contract to agree to work at a certain wage is an easy one to deal with. All the workers quit their jobs and immediately negotiate a new contract with the representation of a labor union. Simple, huh?

They don't have the right to agree to work at a certain wage and then change their mind and ask Big Government or Big Union to come in and force the employer to raise their wages,


Probably not in your and Tom Delay's paradise, but they certainly do in India and America.

Look at the percent of blacks in this country and their abortion rates vs the total abortion rate and you find that about 50% of all black babies conceived are aborted.


Sorry to butt in here, but there are some figures you should be made aware of.

The highest percentages of reported abortions were for women who were unmarried (82%), white (55%), and aged <25 years (51%). Of all abortions for which gestational age was reported, 61% were performed at <8 weeks' gestation and 88% at <13 weeks. From 1992 (when detailed data regarding early abortions were first collected) through 2002, steady increases have occurred in the percentage of abortions performed at <6 weeks' gestation, with a slight decline in 2003. A limited number of abortions were obtained at >15 weeks' gestation, including 4.2% at 16--20 weeks and 1.4% at >21 weeks. A total of 36 reporting areas submitted data documenting that they performed and enumerated medical (nonsurgical) procedures, making up 8.0% of all known reported procedures from the 45 areas with adequate reporting on type of procedure.


I think it's wonderful that even black women have the ability to make these choices about their bodies.
