Dressed to kill in dirty jeans and three year old sneakers with Shih Tsu crap on the bottom and tobacco spit on the toe, hair barely combed but that doesn't matter; It's pulled up in a pony tail anyway. Today it's black, but tomorrow might bring red or yellow or maybe green. No, green is so last year, but then again, so am I. Hardly worn, driven only to the supermarket, a little rusty and only 5 miles to the gallon, moth eaten and only cherished by those who've possessed me. A charming old antique circa 1981 that in, oh maybe fifty years should be worth a buck or two. Box me up and collect dust from my coffin- leave it ajar please and a window cracked to guide in a hot and musty summer breeze ripe with the smell of cow manure of the dairy farm next door or of the stench of angst riddled hormonal teenaged youths rocking for five minutes of freely sold innocence. Though, I'd rather be the precious heirloom of the mother perched on the ledge above the forty-two inch plasma screen so that I may observe you watching your life p you by with all the loathing and disgust only an old family relic can muster. Or maybe I could be your beloved poodle. Dress me up in vacuous sweaters for the holidays. Walk me among the throngs of the soulless drones. I'll wag my tail and roll out my tongue. I'll even let them pat my head without fear of a nasty bite. The rent is free, the food is plentiful and at the end of the day as all canines know, I'll still be smarter than you. Or maybe you will just let me be. I won't race to the next sensation and gobble up their candy. I'll be as loud and as obnoxious as I want. I'll shave my head because the mood struck me. I'll paint my face and bat my eyes and let you cop a feel because it tickles me. I'll read my books, sing my songs, write my sonnets and lose myself in cinematic refuge. I'll laugh inappropriately and tell off color jokes. I'll hiss at you as you step outside the mall doors and pick up your strewn packages and help you to your car. I won't steal your keys and drive across country. I won't pull out a gun and shoot you for the fun of it. I won't claim rights to a pseudo-culture that I was never a part of and never solicited me because the color of my skin blinds you to the alternate road's journey. I won't deny my faith and I will not deny you yours. I will stand up for my country, but I won't stand by my country just because the slogan is catchy. I'll cry when I want and smile when I need to. I'll love you and I'll hate you as I see fit, but that'll never mean I don't care about you. I'll screw who I want to and love who I want to, marry him if I wish and I'll challenge anyone to a duel of wits or even arms if they stand in my way. I'll coddle our connections and note our differences, but I will not let our differences differentiate between us. I'll color outside of the lines- make the sky green and the gr blue. I'll be your best friend and your favorite enemy too. I'll charm you like the snake you are and share my sin with you. I'll kiss away the boo-boo and defend your honor against any foe who dare cross your path. I'll stay up all night and eat everything in the fridge. Tomorrow I'll run three miles and curse the obsession with vanity. I'll drop from this realm to reside in my own world of deceit and drown my sorrows in beer and reluctant idols. So which will it be?
