I have to agree with the Dune series. The complexity and thoroughness
of Herbert's universe-making is unrivaled. If you can find a copy, Honey, try to pick up the unfortunately out-of-print Dune Encyclopedia. My copy cost me more than fiddy on ebay but the entry on the wines of Caladan alone justified the expense. I'm the type who geeks out over detail, though. Anyone who thinks Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson should be dragged from their homes and horsewhipped gets my vote for president. Just throwing that out there. Also, since sci-fi seems to be the thread here, don't forget William Gibson. "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls" by Heinlein is a lot of fun, too. For crimefic fans, DO NOT miss John Sandford's Prey books. I cannot stress this enough. To those rare afficionados of literatoor proper, my highest recommendation goes to "The Great American Novel" by Philip Roth. That's some good stuff. Venom is a sentient puddle of black goo from outer space. |

I tried to read Brian Herbert's first book. He does not has the gift. To me he ruined the name of Dune. The original 3 then second trilogy for a total of 6 books by Frank Herbert are the best lit on the planet. It takes a great author to keep me reading a fiction book. I mostly read non fiction. I am dyslexic so it takes alot of effort to read a book. It took me 2 months to read Dune but I was working and did not have alot of spare time. The next 2 took me about a month each. My exwife could read a book that size in a day or 2. So if I read it is normally to learn something and not for pure enjoyment. Dune series was the only books that were hard for me to put down. I lost sleep to read those books. Most books I never make it past the first chapter. |

but, venom eventually over took spidy didn't it? making them one.
Yeah, until it moved on to Eddie Brock.
yeah, i like dune too.
the complexity of it, you get layers more each time you read it. very well-crafted. i still read the 'house' (eg. house harkonen, etc) series after it. though not as good as frank's stuff, it wasnt that bad.... Andrew Wee www.WhoIsAndrewWee.com |
