The Wild Things
When I was little, I always knew, The place in the forest where the Wild Things grew. Just to sit and watch, Dare I breath, For fear that the Wild Things would make me leave. They would sit and play, with the freedom of ease, But then the old ones came, and they laughed and teased. The creatures would tense, and watch with their eyes, For of the plaque of man, they were wise. I was there the day that they went away, Over the mountain to hide and to stay. And I will never forget the look in their eyes, As they waved that last, and final good-bye. I'm an old man now, and there came the day, That I went back there, where they used to play. And I followed the trail, so weak and bare, ...Picking up tufts of the Wild Things hair. Till I found the spot they had chosen with care, I had finally reached, The Wild Things lair... I closed my eyes, and I was back there, Riding the cloth of a Wild things hair. But back in the present, I stood with fear, In a desolate country, empty and bare. And the only thing that I could see there, Was One Wild Thing, extinctively rare. Tired and thirsty, growing weak, Sitting by a dried up creek. Staring into each others eyes, Morning the loss of another who dies... One solitary creature left in this land, Desperately making one last stand. He was nothing of the creature I once had known, Now poor, and solemn, ... and all alone... I turned my back and walked away, Trying to forget but all in vain. And I knew that this was a place, ... I never wanted to see again. Now lying in my bed, all alone... Thinking of the creatures I once had known. As through my window, from the mountains out there, I always think that I can hear. A sound I simply cannot bare, A soft, lonely cry, from the wild things lair... With Equescent thoughts... (anyone else remember the book)? FroznChild |
