The wake is held over 2 to 3 days for Catholics, followed by a mass and funeral on the 3rd or 4th day following death. If the deceased is being buried in an area where the ground is frozen solid, some may wait for the Spring thaw to bury.

In ancient times wakes where held before cremation or burial of the body just to make sure the person was dead. by the 3rd day signs of decrepitation made it pretty clear that the deceased was in fact dead and could be cremated or buried....

When I go to a funeral now, and at the end when everyone goes up to view, I politely go out the door. I try to go to the family visitation the day before the funeral to speak to the family, but..I just don't go up to the casket. I hate funerals, but..I know there's always going to be one. Since the death of my son, my husband..I just don't like to go view..or stay at the funeral home..I've never been to a wake before..but I know it's when everyone gets together and celebrates the life of the deceased.

im sorry for the loss of your son and your husband

i hate funerals to, at my aunts funeral, her duaghter grabbed the coffin and was holding it, she wanted to get her mom out. ill never forget that day, the saddest day of my whole life. just thinking about me upsets me. seeing my cousin like that was devastating. thats something ill never forget.

Thank you...yes, it's hard..but...it's something everyone has to go through - be it a parent, spouse, child, relative, friend...All anyone can do is move on. We all handle it differently, some it takes longer to adjust than others. I hope it gets easier for you someday.flowerforyou

i think loosing a child must be the hardest, i dont know, i have no children, its just what i think. i just try to not think about that day, but when i do, its got no easier, she passed 3 years ago. when we go and put flowers on her plaque, i tend to think about it more then, and dream about her.
