"Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning.

By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.

The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.

Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher." - http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/bg1713.cfm

I pay $120 a month for my PRIVATE healthcare as I am self-employed. My deductible is $3500. If someone can't afford $120 a month for healthcare I say give up your DirectTV subscription and unlimited free texting and calls with your cell phone.

Exactly. The poor in this country average having 1 car, 2 tvs, 2 cell phones, a/c, dvd player, amd a computer.

Are you guys serious? There are hard working single moms that don't have enough money to pay for health insurance and have jobs that don't offer it. Their ex-husband's are behind on child support.

There are older people that got laid off before their retirement age to allow younger/cheaper workers to take their place. They are taking jobs with no insurance and can't afford their own.

How about the stay-at-home mom that is suddenly divorced and lacks job skills and takes a job with no insurance and has no money to pay for her own.

And the list can go on.....

I was being a bit sarcastic, but was making the point that the poor in the US are way better off than almost ANY other country.

But look at the flip side.

What about single mothers that never want to work and just live off the system? I know a lot of single mothers that have to work their asses off to survive, and get lil to no help from the gov't. But a welfare mother spitting out kids gets everything she could want for free. So now you want to give away health care? What's going to be the driving force to work, if you're just given everything and earn nothing?

Then start a private charity and toss your own money into it. Come to me and I will donate to them quite well also to pay for private insurance for those people. However, tell me I must pay higher taxes so the government can run the healthcare system for them is a big joke on so many levels, for so many reasons.

who was in office when all these mexicans flooded the states..taking jobs from us once again...and please don't say it's because we won't work...it's because we won't work for a rediculas salary.

Those rediculous salaries keep you from paying $5 for a head of lettuce. So, if any red blooded, self respecting, American's won't work for those rediculous salaries, who do you propose to do it? huh

Lol ok I'm done riling up trouble. Time for bed.
Good luck with the grammar and invading mexicans and poor people!

Starsailor - thanks for posting evidence from a solid source to back up your argument...quite informative.

stevewm - I was joking with your language "flooding", not your point. I don't disagree with you on the substance. All in good fun. drinker

astros - Come on man, grammar is the basis of communication, which is the basis of the expression of ideas. It's important. I won't think less of people for the small mistakes, but I'll always point them out. Sorry.

Well at least my grammar is pretty impressive. And I didn't call all single mothers users and whores. But you go on living in your little world, reality will still be here when you get back.

I already do what I can. I do volunteer work for food pantries and more. I teach my child to have empathy for people less fortunate. Do you know that word?

Good, I applaud you for that and I do the same. I donate ALOT of money to charities and have done volunteer work as well.

However, what I am saying is to keep things this way and to institute it into the healthcare providing of those who cannot afford it.

Americans are MUCH more willing to voluntarily donate money, Americans are the most giving in the entire world when it comes to charity. However, Americans ARE NOT willing to pay higher taxes and pay for government programs that often turn out to be run inefficiently, waste much of its money, and never get close to its objective.

Government programs ALWAYS suck, the private can do it better for unlike the government, the private does not have an endless flow of free cash with little expectations for it.

Ask me to donate money to help pay for those who cannot afford healthcare and I will do it. Force me to pay higher taxes for the government to institute healthcare programs for the uninsured and I will protest.

Just give up, he's not worth the trouble. Even though we can't see eye to eye on the health issue, we can both agree whole heartedly on his ignorance.
