i live in america! so why then do 80% of the jobs i am applying for or qualify for require that i am bilingual???? if i chose to move to another country i certainly would not expect that the country change their language to cater to me and then their own people who speak their native language can not get a job because they do not speak my language. i find this EXTREMELY irritating. i am not racist. my daughter is 1/2 spanish. but again, i dont get it!

In fact, most other countries are far more bilingual and cater to English than we do to other languages. |

well it seems to me that the ones melting are the americans. ive worked in community outreach for quite some time. if i were here from another county and not even legally i could get all sorts of help, financial, education, housing, medical, etc...but being that i am from america...i dont qualify (not necessarily that i have applied but i know the ropes). doesnt seem that we take care of people in our own back yards first. in my experiences ive seen our people hungry, cold and homeless turned away, told to get a job....HA if they dont speak another language its difficult. yet, ive seen others, come here, illegally be handed a home, grants for further education, placed on food stamps, etc.... i dont get it!!!!

I can't even speak english let alone another

While I am bi-lingual, I can understand the frustration, however, think of it as business strategy - by requesting employees to be bilingual, the employer is trying to reach a wider audience, hence make more $.

When my brother was in cooking school, his instructors told him it may be a good idea if he learned "kitchen Spanish." He promptly told them, if anyone is working in his kitchen, they better learn "kitchen English" and if another language is spoken on the work floor.......they can find the door.
And he has done it, too. |

We should'nt be forced to speak another language in this country
just to get a job. Our language should be learned if people want to come live here. I am not saying to eliminate their languages. It just puts more stress on a allready highly stressed job market. We have spent millions on putting everything in a bunch of different languages. I have a hard time finding english on instruction papers these days. JMO |

I was born in Puerto Rico (speaking only for myself) and I was taught English at home and in school. I have been bilingual all my life, so dont find it a big to do... jmo |
