I've been biting my nails since i've had teeth in my head to chew on them with . Yes I know nasty nasty habit .
I am on day 4 of NO nail biting . I was feeling pretty proud of myself until tonight I started getting the urge to bite them really really bad . I must be nervous .
Any suggestions on how to overcome this "addiction" laugh ??

I have tried using the bad tasting stuff and it just doesn't work I bite right through it .

Being a nail biter myself, I know how you feel. I have made the attempt a few times but I finally just said screw it.

I used to bite my nails till they bled.
I haven't bit them for at least 20 years.
Take an emery stick and file your nails, once you have them smoothed out you won't want to chew them anymore. Just keep an emery stick with you at all times, when you get the urge to bite, use the stick and file them, it worked for me,
Good luck

I use to bite my nails and then I started getting them done "French tips" then I couldn't bite them anymore and I started getting use to them being long and pretty, then I had to stop getting them done and I was so use to them being long that I found some polish that helps strengthen your nails and helps them grow and it worked!! I have been bite free for over 3yrs now!! I do suck my thumb though when I am really tired guys think this is sooooo cute!!bigsmile

Thanks everyone .... i've been putting on this stuff called Length and Strength complex which is kind of oily so it has kept me from biting because I don't want it in my mouth .... but I can't bring myself to put it on tonight because I really want to bite them so the urge is totally over riding all rational thought .... I keep catching myself putting my finger to my mouth . Ahhhrg .
I tried fake nails but my nails are so short now that they pop right off because there isnt anything there for them to stick to besides skin .

In general there's a reason behind the habit. I used to bite my nails really bad in highschool and finally realized it was just due to really bad stress (when it would come on the worst, I'd bite). After I got over what was stressing me out, 98% of it stopped and never came back.

But in the rare case it's not something like the above, you might try replacing it with another habit, such as... uhh, christ I don't know, biting your tongue or scratching your hand, or something that won't degrade your appearance.

The advice you've already gotten is good but you could also paint your nails with water and cayenne pepper. They used to sell it in a mixture and still may, but you can make your own. It's hot to taste, so it will remind you not to bite them. It stopped one of my sons from nail biting. He'd bring home a lot of sicknesses from school, before he quit.

I'm a nail biter too. So far all these remedies haven't worked for me but they might for others. I notice I bite mine more when I'm nervous or they snag on stuff. I have to say I did get through a situation today where I was a ball of nerves and I didn't bite my nails. Only because I was holding and feeding my daughter.

Figure out why you chew your nails. Is it boredom? Nervousness? Why? Once you figure out why you do it then you can figure out how to stop.
