New Airport X-Ray Shows You Naked
If you're traveling out of Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Ariz., be forewarned: The Transportation Security Administration screeners are going to get a good look at you in that new high-resolution X-ray machine they're testing. The device shows a full body, naked image that clearly displays hidden weapons or explosives, including those made from non-metals, such as plastics and liquids. It also displays just about everything else the good Lord gave you. The Associated Press reports that the new technology is called backscatter, and although it has been around for several years it has not been widely used as an anti-terrorism tool in the United States because of privacy concerns. The TSA has found a way to "refine" the machine's images so that the graphic X-rays aren't quite so X-rated. The new technology will be up and running at Sky Harbor's Terminal 4 by Christmas, and a handful of other airports will have the X-ray machines in place by early 2007 as part of a nationwide pilot program. Initially it will be used as a secondary screening measure. That means, if you set off the alarms on the standard screening process, you'll be directed to a second X-ray area with this new machine. Even so, the TSA will allow you to choose a traditional pat-down search over the backscatter technology. The machines will be set up in such a way that only the security officer can see the image. Images will be deleted as soon as a passenger steps away from the machine and will not be stored or available for printing or transmitting. |

I heard that they might put one of those in an 'express' line at some airports. If you're willing to go through it, you get through security faster.

That is outrageous! ![]() Sure beats a real strip search. I work with a guy that had to go through a strip search coming back in to the country. (Evidently someone with a 'similar' name was on the watch list). Whatever the case, I'd have no problem with it. I've seen a demo of it on TV. It really is more like looking at a full body xray. |
