However..there is always the drama queen contingent, regardless of gender, that keeps the fires fueled.

Understanding the technology is a pretty good place to start... Knowing what an IP is exactly, for instance...

Blocking your machine I.P. is all well and good. But certainly not a fail safe. If you have a hardware firewall, it puts a layer of defense between you and the rest of the world to a point. I would not depend on it keeping you safe though. It only works if you use a fair measure of common sense. It will not protect you entirely from a skilled hacker or well designed and socially engineered exploit. It also will not prevent someone from identifying your internet provider. Which is all you really need to know to report someones nefarious activity.

Even running through a proxy server is not a fail safe. I can make me look as if I am posting this from Vietnam or Main land China if I want to... but if I don't use a true anonymous server and run it through a chain of servers..chances are, I can still be found. Most will not go to the trouble for a few reasons.. It slows your high speed connection... and it is hard to find servers that are consistently up.

So... if you think that your friend, piece of software or appliance you bought at Office Depo is keeping you completely safe? Just the fact that you believe that is a sign of how unsafe you are.

What about it? Other then it potentially being the largest hole in your security you might have.

Many of the wireless networks in homes are inadequately secured. Even if they are set up according to the hardware specifications, and are of a slightly older technology... I can still sit outside your home and hack into them. Read up on the differences of WEP and WPA. While you are there.. See SSID and SSID broadcasting too.

However.. for the sake of this conversation.. whether you are on a wireless network or not is pretty irrelevant.... Unless the person in question lives in your neighborhood or is sitting somewhere within range of your transmission.

Track this signal if you can.

Again... what about it? Sure you negotiate a connection on different IP's.. But that connection is always off of the same server group..and block of IP's. So.. I can track you as far as the provider. I can also intercept what you send and receive with the right equipment if it is not encrypted. If it is.. I can try to read the encrypted packets anyway... In which case.. I could know all your passwords to all your accounts. Including this one. Spoof you and assume your identity.. Who cares where you are?
Bottom line? Radio waves are the least secure form of internet connectivity.... It is not illegal to receive a radio signal. It is only illegal to transmit on a frequency you are not authorized to use. So I can receive enough packets over a period of time to work out a successful hack.. long before I transmit anything.
I can sign on to a number of networks in my neighborhood... get into their machines, see their data, use their accounts... even pretend I am them on sites like this. It is a good thing I'm not a hacker. I'm sure though.. I'm not the only person in my neighborhood that knows this.
