People often say, “Age is just a number,” but those words carry more truth than many realize. While age marks the passage of time, it does not define a person’s potential, dreams, intelligence, or ability to make an impact. History and everyday life are filled with people who shattered expectations simply by refusing to let a number determine what they could or could not achieve.

To add another outlier, Dick van Dyke (100) is married to a 54-year-old woman.

None of these outliers mean that age is just a number. The body unavoidably decays with age. Normally, the mind decays less.

If the age difference is large, it means that the younger partner has to nurse the older partner during the older partner's last years. If the partnership has the financial resources, the burden can become less by hiring caregivers. The hired caregivers don't, however, lessen the emotional burden on the younger partner.

No, you are right, but what it does show is that not ALL people see age difference as a barrier. There are a lot more important characteristics that people look for in a serious relationship in my opinion.

I never said, nor implied, that age difference is the only important factor. I agree that many other factors are important. Before entering any serious relationship, one should consider all factors -- including age. IMHO, extreme age difference is a total no-no for a serious relationship. YMMV.

Age is just a number ... of import.

Can't imagine a 30 something hottie coming at me, knowing that her 'life partner' (intended to match me) may have only a decade or less. Happens, although I don't know why.

The amount of beauty or youth, in my eyes, tells me they want something in exchange for their looks or age. Maybe, after discussion, I'll want what they offer, but keeping them in the thread means they discuss life properly. Most cannot.

Percentages of proper match when age is disparate, are very low chances, so age is quite important.

I guess it is the couple that decide what is best for them. There are so many negatives with a big age difference, they should have a long courtship and experience the negatives and reactions they will receive from family and friends which for the most part will be negative, before marriage. They need to consider a lot more than a couple of similar ages, do they want children for example, the age of one of them may make it impossible unless they are prepared to adopt, or a surrogate, or sperm donor. Yes they would face many negatives which would need to be carefully thought about.

Age isn't just a number—it's a software update that keeps adding features I never asked for. It's a
number my back remembers every morning.

And as that number climbs be prepared to seem
useless to a large segment of society.

It is going to be 'you' against 'them'.

As you gain in knowledge, they lose their tact.

I must've gone fishing... because you're the perfect catch
