Normally when I write opening messages I make a comment about something in their profile or in their photos. A common example would be.

Hi My name is Some Young Guy and I am from the USA. I noticed you like cooking. what are some of your favorite dishes to cook?

Another sample might be. Hello my name is Some Young Guy. I am from the USA and I noticed you like cooking. I am making Tom Yum soup for dinner and was wondering if you could give me a few tips.
Depending on where I am I would change the dish. If i were in Peru i would ask her about Ceviche because Peruvians would be able to relate better to Ceviche than Tom Yum which relates to Cambodians and Thai. I try to relate my interests to where the lady is from. I also take in consideration her culture. I know that Cambodians are more conservative and are concerned about what their friends and family think. I normally keep my messages PG until she starts increasing the rating level.

Your profile says you're from Phnom Penh.
So, basically, your opening email would be a lie.

Probably, not a great idea.
Especially, if you're hoping for a reply.

Can't we start a thread on what not to send? It would be more fun. bigsmile

If someone asked me how or what to cook, I would not reply.

The kind that show you're an interesting person, with an interesting life, that you can get them interested in and wanting to talk to you about it and possibly get together and share.

Other than that, it really depends on what you "really" want.
What is the true purpose of you contacting them.

Hi My name is Some Young Guy and I am from the USA. I noticed you like cooking. what are some of your favorite dishes to cook?

If a woman sent that to me my first thought would be "wow. I feel like I'm 15 and at a dinner party with adults and the person forced to sit next to me is trying to engage me in polite conversation instead of staring into their wine glass hoping tonight is the night they don't empty all the bottles."

That's just me though.

"Can I show ya sumpfin?"...

Won't get a reply.. but it's an opening line.

There is no "best." It's entirely situational. Use your wit, powers of observation, and charm. If you don't have those then you're likely SOL.

Would probably work better than 'swapping recipes'!

Wanna screw?

Has always been a good opening line.
If I don't get slapped, I know odds
are pretty good, that I'll be gettin'
laid.

i am looking for women who want to get married. I am also living in a country where I suspect that the women do not speak the same level of English as I do. If i tried to open a conversation with a joke they might not understand it. I am also aware this is a conservative culture and women aren't looking for one night stands.
I would anticipate that a hi I am some young guy and I am from the USA but currently living in Cambodia. I am looking for a girl who wants a serious relationship and something written in your profile caught my eye.
I am also aware that as i am living in one of the poorest countries in the world many woman would likely see me as a ticket out of poverty. I understand that is why many Filipinas are willing to marry men 20+ years older than them. If you could work at a bakery and earn 80 a month or date a 40 year old man who could provide you with a place to stay, healthcare, 300 a month and took you on trips which would you likely choose

I would suggest, if you see people living in poverty in front of your eyes, please do something to empower the society, instead of judging them. Many westerners living in the third world countries are willing to give respect to the locals by sharing their knowledge.

Please stop generalizing! If you have experienced it, that's your personal issue. Please give respect and low your head down a bit. Thank you. Have a great day!

1. Look at their profile then look at your own.
Find things you both have in common.

2. Send a quick and to the point message which states a few things you have in common and that you are interested in talking because you find them interesting and appealing.

3. Wait for a reply.
Without that reply, if you flood them with messages you will probably get poor results.

Try not to assume or 'read into' what they write in their profile.
Try not to expect results you want. If they happen, treat it as positive feedback. If they don't reply, treat it as they are not interested and move on.
Often, no reply is a reply.

Allow the discussion flow naturally. Don't try to steer it. Allow them to set the direction of your conversation. Be patient.

Don't assume or read into their replies. Read them as they intended to say what they wrote.

If they ask you a question, answer them honestly.
Then include a pertinent question of your own.

For example; if they have food or cooking on their profile, allow them to bring it up first. Gage how important that subject it to them, then let the discussion flow easily in that direction. With them leading it.

Most people enjoy talking about things which they feel passionate about.
Try to imagine your discussion is happening in real time, face to face.
Talk with them, not at them.

If someone asked me how or what to cook, I would not reply.

I wouldn't reply to a question about cooking either. There's cook books or Google for help with that, not something you ask as an opening on a dating site.
