The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in western Pennsylvania, centering on a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, has become the most frequently attended ceremony.
Groundhog Day 2021: Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction http://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=RDAHhUHkzG4 The Stormfax Almanac has made note of the weather conditions on each Groundhog Day since 1999; the almanac has recorded 12 incidents in a 20-year span in which the Inner Circle said the groundhog saw his shadow while the sky was cloudy or there was rain or snow coming down, and in one case said the groundhog did not see his shadow despite sunshine. The Pennsylvania Dutch were immigrants from Germanic-speaking areas of Europe. The Germans already had a tradition of marking Candlemas (February 2) as "Badger Day" (Dachstag), where if a badger emerging found it to be a sunny day thereby casting a shadow, it foreboded the prolonging of winter by four more weeks. Prior to 1993, the Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney attracted crowds of approximately 2,000. The popularity of the film Groundhog Day brought significantly more attention to the event, with annual crowds rising to 10,000-20,000 (with the notable exception of 2021 where the event took place without any crowds due to the COVID-19 Pandemic). Every time the event's shown on the news it's the same group--old white men. Needs some diversity. And for some reason the movie wasn't filmed in the city, but in Indiana, if I remember correctly.

We haven't had much of a winter, so a few more weeks would be nice. So long as it snows more.
