Anyone have problems with them?
I dislike them, but they are kinda interesting looking creatures. I live near Wildlife trails and woods and hear these things scream like wild cats at night. A neighbor said maybe it's mating time in summer! She throws out food for them but I don't because they can come around and be destructive to properly . One was dead in the street by a car this week! That was Sad ! |

No, I have not seen any lately. I have seen more squirrels and birds than before the pandemic!

Too many raccoons and squirrels around my area. They bother the bird feeders and the raccoons like to burrow under sheds. I trapped 65 squirrels one year, taking them 5 miles away and letting them go. I told my work mates about it. They said "Did you trap 65 squirrels or the same squirrel 65 times?"
I tried to spray paint the end of the tail of the first one I caught so I could tell if it came back, but the thing kept moving all over the cage and when I got light headed from the paint, I figured the squirrel was probably feeling the same thing, so I gave up trying that. After squirrels, the next most common thing I caught were the raccoons. They are nasty and smelly and I have friends who found them nesting in their attics. They tear the soffits up and make a smelly mess there. I caught 3 skunks, I was glad to get rid of them safely. I let them go too, never got sprayed. A hawk family nested in a pine tree this spring. I saw no squirrels, and that was nice, but the songbirds also stayed away. The baby hawks grew up and the family went away. Now the squirrels are back. I liked it the other way. |

Nick you had a lot to say! Sounds like you live in the Woods!

I remember as a child, we would have them in our trash cans. Eat out of them. If you leave food out they will eat what they can find I guess.

Nick you had a lot to say! Sounds like you live in the Woods! I'm in the burbs just north of a medium sized city. There is plenty of wildlife around, and the squirrels thrive because a nearby idiot feeds them. A few years ago, I saw a coyote, and then another a week later, so I bought a trail cam so I can see what goes on in the dark. I see a coyote on it every 3 or 4 weeks, and a couple of months ago, caught two of them together in the same shot. Between the hawks and the coyotes, I make sure I am always out when my cats are getting fresh air! |

Some time when I go out to take trash the squirrels chat at me like they want food. Nope I don't feed them ! I have a cat who stays inside !

Racoons are interesting to watch. Haven't seen any racoons lately near the woods but I seen several squirrels! On-line too! |

I never see any raccoons around here, but they are more night creatures. Don't leave food out for wild animals because you'll eventually get problems with them near your house.

Cat, I only throw food out across the alley near the Woods.
I don't want creatures near my house, like possums, racoons or anything. |

I took care of 3 raccoons when they were babies. Bottle fed them. It was for several months until I could release them back to the wild. I had instructions of what to do from the local animal control officer.

A raccoon is a problem only if it goes over the hedge into your neighborhood.

Raccoons scream when they are fighting over territory.

When I took care of a few raccoons, it was not all at the same time. It was 3 separate years. I treated them like pets, but they were not pets. I knew I had to release them and I did, about 30 miles from my house.

About 45 years ago shortly after high school I knew a couple of girls that had a pet raccoon, I was sitting in a chair rolling joints with a machine and sitting them on a stool beside me. After a few minutes I heard this chomp, chomp sound. I looked down and the raccoon had ate 3 joints, a few minutes later this coon shot around the room like a ping pong ball; from the couch to hanging from the curtains, etc.
Then he just relaxed on his back up against the couch and passed out. Pretty entertaining and he was fine a couple of hours later ;-) Raccoons are pretty harmless but not porcupines, them I hate! |

Adult raccoons can get aggressive. My cat hated the raccoons and my cat was a lot more important.
