As far as I see it and have experienced it, the search begin with finding the right venue for you, whether online or not. The venue where the people you're interested in would hang out.
Meaning a mostly heterosexual dating-site is likely not the right place if you're homosexual.
And narrow it down further as much as possible. Do you like arts, find places where art lovers hang out, and so on.
