PC & Windows question.
My PC is from 2010, had Windows 7 when I bought it. I switched to windows 10 when you could for free.
Since, there have been quite a lot of updates, the last one a few weeks ago which was HUGE, took forever. Almost like first installing it.

Now me's wondering... does this slow my machine down? Cos it has gotten real slow where it used to be a rather fast PC. But... it had Windows 7 so I guess maybe not the full capacity that Windows 10 requires to still be fast, although it was suited for the upgrade.

I did get a new motherboard a few years ago, and new HD, and last year new graph's card.

Is that possible? Windows 10 requiring more work memory and so on.
That my machine got slower because of Windows 10?

yeppers so that now you decide it's time for a new puter to run the new operating system. if it was me i would go back to 7

I think you need to unistall 7 to free up space.
Look online for instructions.

Wouldn't that be deleted by Windows when installing W10?
I wouldn't do that myself, I'd have my son do stuff like that, haha.

I'll first have to manifest money for that. Right now got to get my car MOTed first... I dread the cost this year more than other years... Tyres, brakes, and lord knows what else comes up.
I don't want to roll back to W7.

I'm really beginning to think this dude messed something up as the PC was not as slow as it is now.
I always have several tabs open, and now if I am for instance here then click on FB tab it takes a bit as it has to build up the whole page, it's white.
Movies doe hiccup a bit every now and then, the wheel that turns when it starts a movie sometimes just stands still, showing half a wheel.
This was not the case before I went to this dude.

Various things can slow a PC down, but that IS a very small amount of memory. It depends on what you do with the PC. It's always been true that the more graphics intensive (pictures) your uses include, the more RAM you should have available.

You could also check to see exactly what kind of new hard drive you were given. If it's larger than the previous one, but has a lower input-output speed, everything could slow down because of that.

If it's slow sometimes and not other times, it can be due to your internet provider playing games with resources (usually to sell more resources to businesses).

And of course, you should run some anti-virus and anti-malware programs.

Even today, lots of online businesses that we buy things from, add little subprograms to our PC's that cause them to start notifying them every time we shop for something. The time it takes to "tattle" on you to the commercial monitor is going to slow things down.

HD is not the problem. I didn't have this problem until the man opened it up the other day, removed the power supply, graph card, motherboard and 1 memory bank.
I've asked my son to come have a look at it. I'm a noob when it comes to that sort of thing.
It's not Malware, I did have that, but I ran Malware Anti-Malware bytes, removed 14, then ran Malware AdWare (or something hihi), removed a few more.
It's still ridiculously slow. Haven't had this in erm... ever I think, hihi.

Empty your [temp] folders, and [history] folder, to free up some space.
And sometimes the [User] section can have folders with heaps of unnecessary stuff in them, taking up space.
Anti-virus systems can slow things down lots.
Get rid of most 'cookies'.

Another trick: don't keep any of your data / info on the computer itself, but on two or more external drives, (backed up), so the computer is 'empty' and free to use all of its own capacity to 'compute'. This way if the computer dies, you still have all your data separate, and no loss. Just plug your external drives into another computer and continue.

A fast new Solid State Drive is quick, but when it fails nothing is recoverable - all is lost.

Not sure what happened, I was being careful not to tax it too much, suddenly heard some weird sound, like a spring coming loose. That cannot be the CPU fan. I'm not wondering if the HD is bleeped after all.
I think it's some 5 yrs old, I guess it;s possible but how to tell. Sigh... timing sux. Car needs MOT and I'm still paying of a bill.
Cannot take terms payment on another thing. I don't know what it is this year, but concerning health & finance it pretty much sux. Worst year in that sense that I've had in years.
Now on my laptop, which is ancient (14 yrs old) and cannot handle anything, not even FB. Screen is red, has to warm up.
But I'm glad it still does something.

Right now on my phone. I thought of using my Tablet, once given to me by my mom as she got it for free and didn't use it.
Unfortunately I cannot hookup my USB-C hub so I cannot use my keyboard and mouse with it :( Bummer as I was so proud I managed to get the tablet online, haha.
I never used it either so I didn't know, lol.
Now on my phone.
I've never been in this situation before. I've had my PC die on me before but then we always had backups in tha house to tide you over.

If I could afford it I'd buy a new one as it is going to see if I can find someone to help and ask if it is possible to figure out which part has had it.

I was lucky to find myself a nice book so at least I had something to do still after I had to shut my PC down.
And this morning started with breakfast and reading a book, haha. Not done that in quite some time, it wasn't bad actually.
But it's so danged quiet... Since the PC made a bit of noise - the part that wasn't too healthy anymore- I at least didn't hear the peep in my ear (tinnitus). Now I do, haha.
And no radio or telly as neither are connected since I do everything via PC & Internet.
Oh well... Not the end of the world, just bloody inconvenient.

depends on what you use your pc for but 4gB ram is a pretty small amount in any way.

you should at least get 8gb for idle usage and some open Tab's in chrome plus an open program like anything from the office-suite. Win10 is very ramhungry. Alot of programs which get installed nowaday's have your pc start some unnecessary processes in the background at bootup, therefore i would advise to also strip down the startup-manager to only the stuff you need up and running at bootup.

On the Hardwareside of things, if you not have an SSD Harddrive installed i would get one, it's the no.1 speedup for every pc that dosent sport one. Even better would be an .M2 Harddrive - if your Mainboard supports that.

Would also be a good opportunity to make a new, clean win10 install - i would use the official mediacreation-tool by microsoft and a bootable usbstick. You can install win10 with the latest servicepack in one slap that way. Other than let it download and install a ton uf updates right at the beginning.

If you haven't tried, try defragmenting and doing a 'cleanup'.
If you are one that doesn't normally shut down at night, try doing a restart.

You could consult Gizmo on Win10 information.
There are free programs there and they seem knowledgeable, plus there is a chat and a forum available to ask specific questions.

I think the problem was purely hardware related.
My PC was cleaned, and this time cleaned professionally, the way it should be done.
They also removed the cooling fan and block underneath to clean there. Turned out there was a lot of dust and dirt there and the cooling agent in between the block and processor wasn't doing it's job properly.

They also put a new power supply in as the old one was horribly dirty and beyond cleaning.

Now it is as fast as it used to be and doesn't make noise anymore either.

So a slow PC is not always software related, and since the problem occurred after it had been opened and many things were removed and placed back (the 1st time) I was almost certain it had to do with that.

Lesson learnt: don't go to a cheaper dude who thinks he knows what he's doing, but doesn't.
The idiot sprayed WD40 in the powersupply? I was shocked! But before I could say anything he'd already done it.

Anywho, hoping it's all fixed now. Real glad it's back to normal speed, and quiet now!

Ok so you did a large upgrade from Windows7 to 10 and then you got all of the updates too, well, first off Windows 10 and win7 have the same minimum system requirements so that's probably not the problem. However you just moved a ton of data and you said it took forever, So based on the age of your machine and the length of install time my guess it's around 90% chance you have a mechanical hard drive. Way to tell is if you hear a little motor spin up in a spot other than your CD area and stays spinning except for Hibernation mode
Or in shutdown. If you hear this noise you need to run defrag on the hard drives.
