Anyone else out there currently in Iowa? I am in Des Moines right now and loving it, except for the freezing rain, ice storms, and cold weather.

You could say I am from Iowa. I live on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities but that is right across the river. We got hit with the ice storm Monday night but I think your area was harder hit than we were. It sounded like there was many more power outages in Des Moines than here. Hope you fared okay.

Central Iowa wasnt hit as bad as Southern Iowa. Something that I find particularly interesting is the casinos where being used as emergency shelters.
"Here are your cots, blankets, and you will have access to public showers. However there are complimentary drinks in the poker room and rooms available in our hotel" |

I just thought it was nice of the casinos to let all those ppl in.. you know there had to be a lot of crazy ppl in the mix.
It's a little hilarious that for an Iowa room the main topic was weather.. not surprising though. |

Iowa ROCKS! Not the weather, but everything else... especially Des Moines! We have the #3 art festival in the nation. We have more bike trails in Iowa than any other state in the nation. We have low crime rates, low mortgage rates and high quality of air and living in general. Live theater in a Civic Center that is in the top 10 in the nation. Many live bands in several venues, including one brand-new state-of-the-art arena. Semi-pro basketball, baseball, arena football too! We've got the worlds biggest bike ride during one of the hottest weeks of the summer. (www.RAGBRAI.org) We've got awesome cuisine... just ask any of the candidates who spent the last 6 months eating here. We definately have the best pork and beef in the world. Not to mention all the fresh veggies you can imagine come summertime.
Yeah, the weather sucks from December until mid-March... but it's worth it once Spring hits. I invite anyone who hasn't been here to give it a try! |
