Did anyone here know that the United States was the first civilized country to ban slavery in the entire world? There was widespread slavery througout most of europe? yes, I believe slavery was ended, although we have a long way to go to live in harmony. If people understood that there was also widespread white slavery in europe would that make a common bond? Just questions to ponder......

Hey man I would have to totally agree with you....
*Slavery has not and probably won't ever end. *All though i think most slavery within the united states, as far as making people do things against there will and punishing them for not working and a few other things it might have ended but there still are many signs of slavery........ As far as a major thing I see, is that even though it was suppose to be abolished I think the world is enslaved within itself, for the purpose of racism. The aspects and the fights against arguements, racial disrespects and failure to see everyone as equals without lower classes make us slaves to our selves.... Without the equal relationship and thoughts of everyone, to be on the same level, to stop prejudice and racial acts, there will be no true freedom to anyone anywhere.. the world bounds itself within it's own feelings for one another >>>>>> If that made any sense at all.... |

You have to remember in this time and age, chain gangs were commonly used for prisoners, so to put the exception in there for that makes sense. I do believe in the south there are still proponents of the chain gang. |

Actually, slavery was abolished in Haiti, and they gained their independence in 1804. Throughout the British Caribbean islands, slavery was abolished in 1834. And they were just as civilized. Slavery is has not ended, for their is physical slavery as well as psychological slavery. It is still around us whether at work, or society. The way we think and go about our lives suggests enslavement of some sort. |

yes I believe slavery has ended in this country...bigotry and racism hasm't be it white against black..black against white..or whoever against hispanics...If and when racism and bigotry ends..then it will be religous bigotry. And if that ended, then it would be polical bigotry...we are human and that my friends is our downfall..No matter what our color, sex or creed, WE(all colores) are guilty of bigotry and racism, at one time or all times..And any who says they are not are lying to themselves.

The term 'slavery' to mean a white man's ownership of a black person...that has been abolished.
But slavery still exists in other mediums.. from rape to child trafficking. Some people will always seek to control another. The question is whether free will is involved (military service is not slavery...prison is not because a choice was made), etc. |

What in God's name are you talking about? I mean, first off, the distinction between civilized and uncivilized countries is a false one to begin with. And second, the United States was one of the last of the industrialized countries to end slavery, mostly due to the late proliferation of the cotton economy in the south (had it not been for the cotton gin, slavery probably would have ended in the South have a century sooner, and the Civil War would never have been fought). Hell, even Mexico had laws against slavery before the US banned it on a federal level, which was part of the whole thing with Texas. |

I could look this up for you but would deprive you the chance to learn.....many countries and continents continued slavery long after the united states, and that is a fact.....you can twist it any way you want, but its a fact......look it up.

Yes. Slavery did continue in so many other places after America ended it. However, all societies are and were civilised before the formation of the U.S.
Ajhagena is quite right with his response. America was one of the last out of the industrialised nations to abolish slavery. yet, it still continued in some areas because some people refused to let it go. |

Ok to set you straight about this the first slave were brought to Jamestown by the Dutch, who had Baptized them, so according to the laws they could not be enslaved for life but only be indentured servants, just as most Europeans who were sent here. They were not brought to work cotton, they were brought to work the main export which was Tobacco. The Church and State later fixed this problem of having to free slaves, by amending the law so that if a slaves native country was not Christian they could be enslaved for life, this included offspring. Tobacco taxes were also the reasoning for the revolution, this was also the way we paid for help from other Countries, Promises of Tabacco. |

You know thing like this get me, so I would like you to elaborate on this if you don't mind. What is your point? So what would you suggest we do with criminals? I personally think the death penalty should be used much more than it is. JFI most states have outlawed chain gang activities, due to bleeding hearts that sympathize with criminals. |

There is no comparison between a chain gang and slavery as such although some of the the practical sides can be comparable(people being held in chains)Slavery was a direct infringement of human rights and civil liberties ( these people did not commit any crimes) whereas in chain gangs those who were robbed of their freedom were perpetrators of cimes of one sort or another. How does one account or compare the rights of children being exploited, locked away in chains and degregated as the same to that of a chain gang?

Russian tsar Alexander the 2nd signed the emmancipation manifesto, freeing slaves in Russia before Lincoln in the US. Slavery ended before and after the US, we're not in any special club here;^] |
