FIREFOX- is for newbies, im sorry. Windows Defender is a Vista Application, i dont believe it is installable for Windows Xp? I have vista and Defender sucks!

Lol seems me and sumthing have similar opinions in general and maybe in specific to Windows defender, have you used this before Sumthin?

Hey Kal,

Nope I never used it, actually have not even heard much about it. I do things the old fashioned way...I fix the damn thing right the FIRST time and my systems NEVER go down (unless the person starts messing around with the "peer to peer" softwares and or gets into the hacking sites etc. Then the problem is located between the montior and the back of the chair!)

Most likely what has happened in this case is she has gone to sites, clicked on the wrong things (or the misleading things) got some cookies/executables/etc that has "tagged" her system and hence the reason for all the pop-ups and all the other junk. It's a pretty typical scenerio and I would say its probably about 90% chance of whats going on in this case.

Depending on the severity (because I have seen some with 3-4 years worth of chit on them and the registry is so mangles with the junk) it may actually be easier and much better to wipe the drive and do a fresh install of the OS..and JUST THE OS, not a "system restore, etc, that puts all the original garbage back on the system. It takes a few hours for everything, but then you configure it correctly and your system will work SO MUCH BETTER and it will STAY STABLE as long as the user does not mess with those things (like the "peer to peer" or goes on the warez sites, etc.

So no need for the Firefox and other softare junk. My systems are set from the ground up and no need for "topical" fixes Those are just bandaids on a MUCH bigger problem. So do it right the first time and you never have to worry about that other junk. happy

It is a Gateway, probably 10 yrs old. I would say you could have it but I don't know how to take out the guts so that you could not see what I have been up to in these 10 yrs. devil devil  LOL Kidding...no porn but do have some rather personal writings.

I am going to the Geek Squad I think. No clue what I need...something that can get reception all across the states and take the shock of being on the road.

LOL..OMG!!! 10 years old and prolly NEVER done a disk cleanup or even defrag!

And "Geek Squad"??? Girl what are you drinking...and why haven;t you shared!? Sounds like you are hitting the hard stuff! laugh

If and when you are looking for a new system (sounds like you will be looking for a laptop for travel) just e-mail me when you are ready. I can find you the best deals around..no middle men and get you a really GOOD system for really cheap prices1

I just got a friend of mine a new tower system..a 2.2 GHz Core Duo, 1 gig DDR2 667, 160 gig HD, DVD burner, 256meg video card, 19" wide screen flat panel...$419!!!

So the offer stands..I'm here to help anyone. I'm limited in the areas of knowledge, but computers, especially hardware/netwroking/config/troubleshooting I have been doing 17+ years and can usually help get the problems fixed. All you have to do is ask. bigsmile

totally agree, especially with the Reinstalls. I like to get a fresh format once every couple years, NO system RESOTRE!!!! I generally reformat a computer after its bought from the store actually.

For sure! All it takes is one wrong, [Yes] and your hit.

Havent you also heard that you should not click [Yes] or [No] but to hit the [X] at the top right screen? i have never had problems with pop-ups or anything in 3-4 years

Lol the personal writings, all that would have to be taken out would be the Hard-drive, which is what most companies take out of thier comptuers. But 10 years old? yea time to up grade!..

Agreeing with Sumthing again, stay away from the Geek Squad after all they will suggest you anything that pretains to best-buy which isnt always the best idea.

Nice deal where did you get that one At
//2.2 GHz Core Duo, 1 gig DDR2 667, 160 gig HD, DVD burner, 256meg video card, 19" wide screen flat panel...$419!!! ///?

Yeh, I have been doing this chit 17+ years, have had 2 viruses in that time. One was way back in Windows 3.1 and never figured out what that one was...but it destroyed the Windows directory..luckily no other files, but toasted the Windows directory in its entirety.

The second virus was when they first started doing the viruses that tagged your e-mail list. I got an e-mail from a friend I have known well, opened it up, my screen flashed twice and i knew i was done!

Yeh I still format about once a year or so, just because the registry will always get packed with crap and never cleans up after itself. But usually just a good system clean and defrag keeps me running smooth without any problems what so ever.

That $419 deal was a one day only thing directly from dell Small Business. Saved like $370 INSTANTLY on the system, so almost HALF PRICE!

I run across those things all the time. I just picked up a Samsung 8.1 MP digital camera, hs the big LCD on it and all the features..with tax and shipping was like $103! I did not need one, but it was usuaully $269, so I bought it just for the price!

I do that a LOT, I pick up things at great prices and find homes for them later. Just like I have a Yahmaha 5960 7.1 surround sound receiver. MSRP $549.99, even on sale at Best Buy its $499.99. I have this one (only missing the remote) for $200!

So I can find the best deals on any computers/electronics around. bigsmile

i had the same thing happen to me. i was typing away in my email account and a freeking, notice i said freeking pop would pop up because that is what the goddamn things do, and that is pop up because they were designed to pop up, and pop up right in the middle of something very important which does not include a pop up because then you can't see the damn screen because it obliterates what you are trying to do but not the pop up and i wonder why.....
do ya get the idea i am a little mad about the whole affair>??????and MSN, if you are reading this, i am showing you my finger for all the lies you tell me about what is going on with my account.

LOL..not a problem. I can easily point you in the right direction in both the laptop and getting it setup properly.

I've been doing this forever and know beyond any doubt how frustrating a computer can be when it does not function properly. Computers are actually unforgiving. one small thing out of whack and the whole damn thing can screw up!

So I know them well. Just let me know, will be happy to help. happy

ROFL..oh I feel your pain!! and amazing you have such a sense of humor about it. I have "flipped off" more computers than Bill Clinton has had sexual relations!

But wait! There is GOOD NEWS coming in 2008! Imagine a place you can go online..but NO SPAM, NO POP-UPS..NO BS of ANY KIND! Find EXACTLY what you want, where you want all the way down to your own neighborhood! No, not like Google or Yahoo searches, where you put in a simple search and get 412,976 results...but the ACTUAL things YOU are looking for!

Sounds like an amazing place? But is it REAL!!?? LOL...its kicking off in beta in mid january. So HOPE is just around the corner! bigsmile

i had 2 as well, 1 was a email like you said this one was when i was a novice. It messed up everything very slowly.. dont remember what happened =)

2nd one, I was in a very bad website and i knew it, i was looking for [NO-Cd-Patchs] cam across one a pop-up came up and i accidently clicked yes. This destoryed my comptuer however i managed to fix all the errors in 3 hours, i still reformatted though couldnt risk it. Registry deletion, msconfig, uninstall spy-bot, deletion of suspicious files, ect.

I like those deals, im looking for a camera and house surrond sound, let me know. =) whats your secret?

Firefox is only good becasue it is not popular, its fast only becasue of the lack of feature, and no pop-ups becasue of the foreign use of html coding i believe. Give it time FireFox will be a typicall Internet explorer. Besides getting to the good ares on the internet are not possible with Firefox.. I dont want someone holding my hand when im looking for NoCd Patches =)

Jeezus. Why do I always have to clean up these little debates?

1. Firefox is a waaaaaaay more secure and speedier browser than IE. IE is gay, end of story. If you want, drag out Opera and try it, it's OK, but I dig on Firefox because of all those cool and useful little extensions you can uhhh, extend onto it.

2. Windows Defender IS installable on the XP although for the life of me, I can't see why the hell you'd want it. It's bloatware at best. You want computer protection? Three letters: AVG. It's free, it's efficient and it does all the hard work for you...and now it even comes with anti-spyware, so there.

3. MissWright--you need to get a registry cleaner probably. If you're running XP or Me, there's a TON of them out there although, for my money, I'd go with CCleaner (Google it). It's a free download and install and pretty much helps to clean your system. But basically, you have an old rig and you need to replace it with something newer and more compatible with today's tech, both online and off. I recommend anything from Compaq no less than a 120GB hard drive (depending on your media saavy), 2GB RAM (regardless of what you do; more memory =fast computer), a dual core processor, which is pretty standard these days and 2 optical (read:DVD-R/W+/-) drives. Run XP with service pack 2 and call it a day.

Anything else, contact me. If for some strange reason I don't have the answer, I can get it.

Good luck.
