'They deserve better': Greentown residents rally around family targeted by racist letter

GREENTOWN – Susan Tobin said she was shocked and saddened when she heard about a letter left on the door of a Greentown home that contained derogatory racial comments towards the family's adopted black child.

"We were all really surprised," she said. "It's not like that in our community. I'm not surprised that there is racism, but to have it in your backyard in a small community is unexpected."

Howard County deputies said the letter was found on Oct. 13 on a home the family had recently purchased at the intersection of 600 East and 100 North, but the family hadn't moved into yet. Deputies are now investigating the letter as a hate crime and intimidation case.

. . . On Thursday evening, Tobin dropped off a basket to the family targeted by the letter. Inside were over 60 cards and letters written by kids and residents from Greentown welcoming them to their new home.

From the same newspaper one day later:

63-year-old Greentown woman charged in racist letter incident

A 63-year-old Greentown woman was arrested Thursday after police say she left a racist letter aimed at a black child on the door of her neighbors' recently-purchased home.

Deborah Cantwell was booked in the Howard County Jail and charged with misdemeanor counts of intimidation and criminal mischief for a crime that's left the Greentown community rallying around a family left traumatized.

. . . Investigators, who first believed the letter was written by juveniles, later obtained text messages that had been sent by Cantwell to another person, whose name was retracted from the affidavit.

"I am stressing now that we are going to get black neighbors," Cantwell texted. "I am hoping that more people look at the house and an all-white family are the ultimate buyers. I am afraid the stress of black neighbors could put me in the hospital. My blood pressure is elevated just thinking about the possibility."

First, as vile as it is, Im surprised it rises to a crime and not free speech.

second, Im not surprised at all that it happened, just that it made the news as if its not something that doesnt happen fairly regularly,,,, racist sentiments from others, that is.

and I actually sadly t hink her sentiment is common too. I have been in online debates before about it. I have NEVER in my life, when moving, checked or thought to check or new I could check the racial status of the people in the neighborhood. but Ive been told by others that they do and that it is easily searchable (Which is weird, because I did once ask the status of the neighbors to an agent where we were thinking about moving, and I was going to clarify that I meant the family status of whether there were many parents with children, but the agent cut me off to inform me that they were not allowed to disclose racial demographics to potential residents)

but yeah, the prejudgments will always be there, sadly.

The text messages were free speech.

The note on the door of the new family's house was harassment.

Racism is unfortunately alive and well

We still have a serious on going situation here in the N.Y.C. area where black thugs are randomly beating the hell out of Jewish people, elderly Jewish and Jewish women as well. Mostly in Hasidic Jewish areas.

Just the other day they caught on camera one black guy actually running clear across a busy street just to hit a defenseless Jewish ( Hasidic clothing) guy with 2 x 4.. over and over. a stranger to him. The cops caught him the next day.

Been happening for many years now.

Thats strange. I was just saying to my daughter about the synagogue attack that racism is senseless, yet it is understandable due to immersion of negative media and education around certain groups that people would project those feelings at the groups being so negatively framed by our culture.

However, its very rare that I hear anything about Jewish americans that is negative, I mean, close to zilch, so ?I dont get where people in the USA at least are projecting hatred onto them, I cant see where it is eminating from, like with other minorities

But maybe it is just community based things, and people seeing things in their own community that they blame others for and project hate onto them based upon.

Or maybe people are just dumb regarding garb and they think every body in their hated group wears certain clothing and only people from that group would be in that clothing ... who knows.
