They're obviously not superior in the self discipline and control category.

And that tends to be a trait of insecure people.

People that are insecure tend to feel helpless to control themselves, especially internally/emotionally/mentally, so they have to create external illusions that hide that fact and make up for their failings, external trappings and behavior that validate they do have something they don't really, that they can't live up to outside of the bubble they create.

Can't stop eating, worried about appearance, worried about what others think? Well, don't stop eating, adopt some outlandish outfit or personality, control the bubble of influence, control who you interact with at all costs and make sure it's only those that are easily controlled and validate what you want to feel is true.

So they create an illusion of "supremacy" then seek out those that will validate it.

Kind of like cult leaders and weak religious figures.
They don't have to think about what they believe or live by any rules they want to exist but can't enforce and are mostly about their selfish emotional fulfillment, they just get weak willed people that need simple validation to get into a fervor that will do it for them for the sake of acceptance, belonging, routine, structure, and purpose.

A specious facade that has the potential for dangerous consequences.
