Well it would be a bit uncomfortable for the woman if she is eating and the man isn’t. As for the bill : 50/50 imho.

I hear what you're saying and agree that there are those out there that are cheapskates.

But in all fairness, I also believe that depending on the culture, maybe it's not considered him being a cheapskate. And if a woman offers and the man lets her pay... I don't believe that makes him a cheapskate either. Maybe he is respecting her wanting to do that.

In this particle situation, probably so since the poster has a problem with the guy doing this, and is asking about it.

I thought he was not eating because he was not hungry, I had missed the part that he was not eating to avoid spending money.
It makes sense now.

I have had dates where he pays, I pay, or we split it.

There have been on 4 involuntary "I pay" dates in which the man didn't have his wallet.
Those are the ones that really bug me.

20 years ago it was an unwritten rule, men paid for dates when courting a woman,it was so simple.

today, its who ever asks pays, if you have sex you better get the contract signed and notarized.

If you meet them for the first time make sure you have a print out of your police background check, a psyche evaluation, credit bureau,ID and a DNA sample.

The man the OP is talking about sounds like a cheapskate and probably the type that insists if he pays you better go back to his place or be invited to your place.

Consider yourself lucky he showed his true colours from the get go.
