Well after a few years of saying we must go,myself and a couple of friends are visiting auschwitz next week.
I'd of thought everyone would have heard of it, it's one of the main concentration camps set up by the nazis for there 'final solution'
To exterminate every jew in Europe.
I've been to many ww1 and ww2 sites throughout Europe, the war graves and other sites.
Just thinking has any other members been there?

Many many years ago I read everything there was
on this subject matter.
I won't go through that again.
I cannot imagine visiting the sites, though I
have been close by.

It would make it all too..real.

I would be interested in hearing how it goes
for you :-)

I've seen enough documentaries on it I feel I've been there. It will be a real interesting and an eye opener of a visit.

I don't think i can step into there. I read a book about how Hitler did to the jews and i felt pánic and tearsful so there is no need to visit the site. go well Mike and bring us your report

Auschwitz .. a notorious Arbeit Macht Frei - Work Sets You Free - comes to mind. Never been there, and not sure if I'd like to be ..
However, would like to hear from a direct source - Mikey - how his trip went, though

Seems kind of macabre to want to visit a site where people were murdered.
I can see keeping the site as a memorial. But I would have no real desire to see it.

Agree with that. There are thousands of other places to visit all over the world that offer culture, beauty, excitement, and even historical places if you are into that. But I wouldn't waste money and time on such a depressing trip...but to each their own.

There is reality all around you and memorials all around...Just would not plan a trip around a memorial. But of course I respect your interests and that is all that matters...where you want to go!
Have a safe trip and enjoy yourselfdrinker

Would you not visit the world trade centre memorial then ?

First, I still would not plan a trip around it, NYC is a great place to visit and then I would go see the memorial as just a part of a greater trip to see Broadway,The Village, China Town etc etc.

Second, The Trade Tower memorial is a really modern, beautiful site with a lot of inspirational stories and nice photos of those that were killed compared to Auschwitz that is pretty much kept like it was...very depressing and painful to comprehend.

Like I said before...If that's what your interested in then you will probably have a great trip.

I wish I would have had more free time in Poland a couple of years ago to visit but it was a 3-hour car ride from where I was at and I only had a half day free.

Mike, I would like to hear what your experience and thoughts are on it.

Personally I wouldn't be overly critical about this destination. Yup, it's full of sorrow and horror happened in the past, but those people who lost their lives there should be remembered .. history should be remembered .. and as far as we remember, such horrors will not happen again .. at least let's hope so ..

I don't know a lot about this, but the little I've learned about is really sad and heart breaking.

Good post Mikey, like Buzzy said, they need to be remembered. History is an important part of life... I look forward to hearing about your trip.

I saw a good series on Netflix about the camps. What those people endured I cannot imagine. It will not look like it did during WW2 but to go there and stand on that ground will be something. Tell us about it when you return Mikey.

Krakow also had a concentration camp..
I'm sure you will be emotionally moved as you stroll through the area... pay your respects
I've read many books on the camps... some I could only read pages at a time - just so unbelievable what the 'doctors of death' had done.
People should never forget.
Have a safe trip
