there is no "school tax" in Texas, only "property tax"
on the value of the property which a citizen owns...
the tax assessor determines that value and that is the
amount of tax the owner pays.

how the state divvies up that money can vary from state to
state, as eric demonstrated for his state...

my neighbor has 5 children in the school system. i have none.
both of our tax liability is the same because our homes are of
equal value...it has nothing to do with how many children we
each have...it is the price we ALL pay to maintain a FREE
PUBLIC school system which children are required to attend..
if my neighbor wants his children to attend an accredited
private school he is allowed to do so at his OWN expense and
it does not alleviate his property tax liability in any way..

Don't know about others but here school tax is paid directly to the school district. Not sure how the state get theirs share of it.
We do have s couple of large very nice Charter Schools here, they get state funding also. Seems to be the trend.

In Texas when you get your tax bill it is divided into category's and it does list school as well as hospital ,college, county and the city your paying too... does not say it is all property tax...

Then business get charged for property tax..

so it is assessed as a property tax and dispursed as per each category. and yes the businesses would also be assessed for property value.
basically the same as here in nh

there is no other tax levied except the PROPERTY TAX..

the bill you receive is an EXPLANATION of what the state is
going to do with the revenue collected from your property
taxes....so much allotted for this, so much for that...etc etc..
what is so hard to understand about that ??

eric, i can see you get it..

and to drag this back a wee bit closer to the op topic point i think the petition in cali is a great idea. it has been talked about here for seniors at least, but never implemented anywhere in nh that i know of

County school taxes are included on the property tax bill. If you
check, most school districts have their own tax office and it is
run by the school district.

like this...

ok, no problem.
Did you see that Dallas county schools are getting out of the
school busing business? I guess they bled that cash cow dry.

is it their intention to privatize the busing ?

if so, i think that would be one raucous school board or
city council meeting to attend...my taxes to subsidize a
private business ??? be a lot of protesting going on there..

Yes, I think so. DISD has a lot of problems.

well that is opening a big ol' can of worms...
like will it be an open bid contract ? will they provide new
equipment, will they change the routes and many other things..
it would seem to me that sticky fingered politicians will be in
it up to their necks....maybe awarding the contract to their
*aunt mabels auto-coach* company or something like that...lol

What I know is, that it's one of the most destructive ideas anyone in the US can propose. Almost rises to the level of traitorous, it's so bad.

The reason to have public schools, paid for by everyone, has NEVER been "because not enough people can afford private schools."

It has ALWAYS been because the only way to have a citizenry that is prepared to

* be ready for employment as is;

* be able to serve well in defense of the nation;

* or be able to carry out even the most BASIC duties of all citizens,

is if they receive a coordinated education.

If you don't think you benefit from having everyone around you be educated, it's because you are purposely refusing to think things through logically.

The cost of EVERYTHING in your life would go up dramatically,if every employer had to pay to educate their workers, as was the case in pre-capitalist Europe.

I don't know what they are going to do. Their buses were so old and wore out they had to resort to picking kids up in private vehicles
a couple of years ago. Parents complained so they had to do something
else.

I thought I ask that awhile back ... how much was the school tax ...
I think the answer was hardly nothing to speak of really ... so I was not bothered by it ... my guess is ...it depends on each state ...

I get paying for schools but I understand the other side too. My uncle is married to a man and has no intentions of having kids. I get he made a choice and shouldn't have to pay. I, also, get wanting to contribute to the future. There should be some allowances

Btw... What I read about the whole Texas debate....I saw people say it was incorporated in property taxes. So arguing otherwise is silly. The property tax is an umbrella tax and it incorporates schools. Don't get hooked on semantics

School districts in Texas are a taxing entity. Their taxes are separate
from state and county taxes. Here we pay county taxes, which include
a school tax for county schools and we pay a tax to the ISD where one lives.
Those that don't live in the school district don't pay have the tax.

Here in Jersey The school tax is out of control. Constantly rising.. constantly. I am all for education.. it is a valued necessity. But our teachers here are unionized and get paid.. a lot.. a real lot. Look in the parking lot.. Lexus.. BMW Caddies and still constantly want... more. they pay NO heath insurance cost... NONE.

What job has that?

On my back....that I do not agree with

Yea, that's messed up. Bet there's a lot of corruption too.
