Injured Teen Football Player Stands for National Anthem
VitaTonga http://www.toddstarnes.com/column/injured-teen-football-player-stands-for-national-anthem/ *Embedded Links * When it came time for the National Anthem, the Blue Raiders stood at attention – with their hands over their hearts. They insisted that Vita be at the front of the line – in his wheelchair. But the young teenager refused to stay seated. With his leg heavily bandaged and braced, he lifted himself out of the wheelchair and joined his teammates in honoring our great nation. Vita’s dad told Fox 4 in Dallas that he got a bit emotional watching his son’s patriotic gesture. “My father is from Tonga,” Charlie Tonga told the television station. “America means something to our family. It’s huge to always stand when the national anthem is played. It’s important to us.” Tonga - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonga/ Mr. Tonga took a photograph of his son and as they say – it’s gone viral. But Vita simply shrugs off his newfound celebrity. "I didn't really think about it," Vita told Sports Day. "People give their lives just so I can stand up over here in the United States. So therefore I feel as an American citizen I should stand." Isn’t it refreshing and reassuring to know there are still some football players left in this nation who are still proud to be American? |

good for him, but
oh gawd proud of being american is not summed up by sitting or standing for an anthem and not for nothing but people die for all of us to have the right to CHOOSE whether to sit or stand |

He had just had surgery the day before if correct for his ACL which he should not have been putting weight on that leg..
I admire him for what he did but even if he had sat I would have been fine with that as well..due to his injuries.. But yes it made me smile that the American Flag means something to them.. I have seen many say that it is their right to sit if they wish that we have a right to choose.. Men/Women fought for our freedom. Yes we have the right to voice our opinion. But regardless if they put their hand on their heart or not they should stand in respect for the Flag which is what the National Anthem was wrote for.. In order for the Flag not to fall men gave their lives just to make sure it did not fall.. For some it may not mean a thing to you but yet if you are within the US then it is the men that died holding that Flag up is the reason we stand and give our Respect for the American Flag... The National Anthem was wrote due to them holding the flag up as they died then the other stacked the dead bodies and it keep the Flag from falling it was tattered but it never fell.. The Flag flies high as well to show Respect for our Military now, those that served and those that Gave All.. |

I respectfully disagree, its a custom, if it means so much to someone, they are free to stand for it,, I dont believe it has to or does mean the same to everyone and therefore I dont believe there should be any judgment on people for not choosing to stand.

It would be far more refreshing and reassuring if the media didn't participate in peer pressure campaigns over stupid things. I'm surprised there aren't more conservatives saying "you know what? Why the f am I standing for the national anthem? Pride in my country? We have no borders, our culture is constantly corrupted by the huge liberal and progressive problems in media and education, the government is running amok with lies and propaganda, we're in wars all over the place fighting enemies of our own creation, killing civilians, freedoms are being abridged left and right...the only way this could happen is if this country let it happen...so why would I support it? I'm going to sit during the national anthem before I am entertained! That'll show Oblowme!" |

I respectfully disagree, its a custom, if it means so much to someone, they are free to stand for it,, I dont believe it has to or does mean the same to everyone and therefore I dont believe there should be any judgment on people for not choosing to stand. Well, I'm one of those guys who DO pass judgment on people who disrespect the country they live in AND use a platform ( T.V. )to do it, thus forcing THEIR views on those who did not ask for it. The football player who decided to use the media for his " protest" has a pretty long arrest record. In my opinion, it should be America protesting him. If he dislikes the country that he lives in then by all means.. leave.. 10,000 would take his place.. in a heartbeat. its a tired argument, that not liking somethings happening in a country means not liking the country it meant something different to him so he didn't stand, that's not disrespect,, disrespect would be flipping a bird or mooning or streaking during the tradition,,, |

be cautious of false idols,, its a flag

And he certainly did disrespect his country.. his employers.. his team and every football fan who was then subject to HIS personal belief.. like it or not Like I said before. I watched that game and the best part of it came when he got his " clock cleaned" out there on the field PC B/S aside....Made me smile :). how did he force his views, he was silent was it acceptable for those standing to be 'forcing' their views on him? anyone making a choice has a personal belief they are following |

be cautious of false idols,, its a flag You mean like Farrakhan, Sharpton and folks like that... it certainly is a flag. ummm, farrkhan, Sharpton, and folks like that shouldn't be idols either I don't get my panties in a bunch when people don't show their support for them either,,, glad we agree its a flag |

I was born here, is the first reason
I respect people, not things and places, and I have many loved ones and people in America that I respect is another I appreciate that I have access to resources like clean water, air, food, and general safety and education is another I appreciate that I have 'freedoms' like speech and religion that don't cause me to be imprisoned is another I am used to American culture and haven't been inspired to adapt to the cultures elsewhere,,is another actually moving to other countries without significant financial assets or resources is not so easy, is another nearly all of my family and loved ones are here, is another |

If someone doesn't stand, that is their right under Freedom of speech. It id my right (under the same amendment) to find it disrespectful and speak out. They can think it's just a flag or a piece of cloth or whatever. To me, I give more than 2 craps....that is my right.
Obviously even Kaepernick and others think it's more than just a flag or they wouldn't protest it. Just as they can protest, I can protest them. I can respest those that to stand, as well. |
