Colin Powell attempted to persuade Hillary Clinton and her aides to not use him as a scapegoat for the controversy surrounding Clinton's private email server, according to leaked emails hacked from Powell's Gmail account.

In the emails, which were obtained by The Intercept, Powell wrote to at least one confidant about his repeated warning to Clinton not to blame him for the scandal.

“I told her staff three times not to try that gambit. I had to throw a mini tantrum at a Hampton’s party to get their attention. She keeps tripping into these ‘character’ minefields,” he wrote. He also had tried to settle the matter in a meeting with Clinton aide Cheryl Mills in August.

In a separate email, Powell said he “warned her staff three times over the past two years not to try to connect it to me. I am not sure HRC even knew or understood what was going on in the basement.”

Powell had previously accused Clinton of trying to “pin” the scandal on him after Clinton, who served as secretary of state under President Obama, told federal authorities in July that Powell had detailed to her his email practices as secretary of state under George W. Bush, according to a New York Times report in August.

The paper cited a passage from an upcoming book about Bill Clinton’s post-presidency that read, “Powell told her to use her own email, as he had done, except for classified communications, which he had sent and received via a State Department computer.”

Powell’s emails from his Gmail account were leaked by D.C. Leaks, a website that releases hacked emails from U.S. military officials and politicians and is said to have ties to Guccifer 2.0, who some believe has tied to Russian Intelligence.

According to The Intercept, Powell regularly exchanged emails with reporters and friends about Clinton’s server controversy, explaining that his situation had been different than Clinton’s. Powell never setup a private server and used a government computer for classified matters.

The Clinton campaign’s attempt to try to say Powell had encouraged the use of a private server left him deeply troubled.

“They are going to dick up the legitimate and necessary use of emails with friggin (sic) record rules. I saw email more like a telephone than a cable machine,” Powell wrote to business partner Jeffrey Leeds. “As long as the stuff is unclassified. I had a secure State.gov machine. Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris.”

Clinton had sought Powell’s advice about his private email account during a June 2009 dinner at former Secretary of State Madeline Albright’s house. Powell gave Clinton “written guidance on why and how [he] had been doing it.”

A spokesperson for Powell said in a statement last month that he had talked to Clinton about describing his use of his personal AOL account for “unclassified messages and how it vastly improved communications within the State Department. At the time there was no equivalent system within the Department.

"He used a secure State computer on his desk to manage classified information," the statement added.

I so respect Colin Powell and was disappointed when he chose not to run for President.

I try never to use the words "hilary" and character,
in the same sentence.


BUT, it's just never been within Hilary's character,
to accept responsibility for her own actions.

I never liked that cover story anyway. The I am firmly opposed to any grown up trying to get away with the old five-year-old's excuse of "well, but HE/SHE did it too!" Or "they did it first!" Or any other such variation.

You either do whatever it is, or you don't, and you are responsible for what you did, 100%, no matter what anyone else did or didn't do.

The ONLY part of the "What about what Colin Powell said?" bit that I found to be rational and respectable, was where Powell said that EVERYONE has poorly labeled things on their non-secret computers, that technically shouldn't be there, because of how hard it is to get that stuff perfect.

And no, no one who claims it's easy to get security classifications right is simple, knows a damn thing about the reality of it all.

But back to Clinton, my understanding is that Obama gave NEW marching orders regarding such things, long after Powell was out of office, and THOSE are the directives that Clinton should have followed.

and just think, Powell endorsed Hilliary for president. She'll throw her grand kids under the bus if it will get her elected.

See, I used to like Powell but I still can't shake him and his UN security council speech. It was an epic fail and unleashed the misery we are experiencing today in that region still.

He's a 4 star general? I'm appalled, I don't think he's any less guilty than Hillary in these email leaks.

In a batch of leaked emails, former Secretary of State Colin Powell attacks both presidential candidates. He labels Trump's "birther" movement as "racist," and says Clinton's "hubris" screws things up. CBS News' Nancy Cordes has the details.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell ripped into Hillary Clinton in several personal emails over the years, according to a document dump of hacked emails on the website DCLeaks.com.

The document batch, which included emails from June of 2014 to August of 2016, gave a revealing look into the former secretary's thoughts on the 2016 election.

In one 2015 email, Powell commented on Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure at the State Department and charged that "everything HRC touches she kind of screws up."

In another message from 2014, Powell said of a still-potential Clinton presidential run: "I would rather not have to vote for her." A spokesperson for Powell confirmed to CBS News that his email had been hacked.

In another email to Leeds on Aug. 18, 2015, Powell weighed in on his own use of private emails for State Department business:

"Agree, press has started asking Peggy and me about our use. We have answered 3 IG questionaire [sic] and are clean. A newsie asked today to interview me on my use. Told them to read my book, Chapter on "Brainware." They are going to d**k up the legitimate and necessary use of emails with friggin record rules. In a recent email dated Aug. 23, 2016, Powell called Clinton's excuse for using an email server a "dumb" one:

Dumb. She should have done a "Full Monty" at the beginning. She was using email when she took over. They put the personal system in the basement a few months later. The dinner was June 16th. She didn't need any advice or ok from me; she was already doing it. I gave her written guidance on why and how I had been doing it. I warned her staff three ties over the past two years not to try to connect it to me. I am not sure HRC even knew or understood what was going on in the basement.

In an Aug. 28 email this year, Powell described some encounters with Hillary Clinton's campaign staff "burying the email flap":

Sad thing it that HRC could have killed this two years ago by merely telling everyone honestly what she had done and not tie me into it. I told her staff three times not to try that gambit. In an Aug. 21 email bashing Donald Trump, Powell talked about his frustration with Clinton, as well.

It could have been so easy for her just tell what she did, a "Full Monte." Last night several folks came up to me to say "She threw you under the bus." I replied 'don't be silly, she is under the bus.' The FBI guys loved me and so did the IG types. But conversation turned to: "Clintons always trying to use you." Most folks up here detest Trump and won't vote for him, but dislike her intensely at the same time. Ah, well the country will decide. The NYT piece yesterday on emails was fine and balanced. I worked with the reporter. I found out from her about the book coming out. No alert from State or HRC team. Same with WP reporter. He gave me info that had been leaked to them. Trump just looks stupid trying to appeal to blacks and Latinos.

In an Aug. 21 email, Powell called the birther movement "racist" -- a movement Trump started when he asked for Mr. Obama to release his birth certificate during the 2008 election:

Yup, the whole birther movement was racist. That's what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn't keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim. As I have said before, "What if he was?" Muslims are born as Americans every day. The transcript thing was also racist. The President graduated Harvard and was editor of the Law Review. And now decades later Trump wants to see his transcripts to see if he should have been admitted. And for him to say yesterday that within four years he would have 95% of blacks voting for him is schizo fantasy. But no one could believe him. And Ailes as an adviser won't heal with women, don't you think? Ailes may soon be up on charges.

The possibility of a Trump win came up in this email from Powell to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in June.

In this email from June, Powell called Trump a "national disgrace" and said that Democrats needn't attack him, since he was already "destroying himself:"

No need to debate it with you now, but Trump is a national disgrace and an international pariah. Even Gerson, Krauthammer and Will are beating on him. He is in the process of destroying himself, no need for Dems to attack him. Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again.

Powell to media: "time to start ignoring him"

In December, he wrote to CNN's Fareed Zakaria about the "latest outrage" from Trump and said it was "time to start ignoring him:"

No, I am being called by everyone re Trump. It is time to start ignoring him. You guys are playing his game, you are his oxygen. He outraged us again today with his comments on Paris no-go for police districts. I will watch and pick the timing, not respond to the latest outrage..

Powell emails reveal Clinton's apparent disdain for Obama

When news broke that former Secretary of State Colin Powell's emails were hacked, just about every mainstream media headline read: "Colin Powell calls Donald Trump a 'national disgrace.'"

I get the punch that headline packs. But it misses the bigger takeaway from those leaked emails: They are far more damaging to Hillary Clinton than to Donald Trump.

The "revelation" that Powell has disdain for Trump can't be much of a surprise given his past endorsement of President Barack Obama and the fact that so many of his fellow generals and national security peers have publicly pushed back against the Republican nominee for months. Plus, seeing Trump being called a national disgrace or worse in the news media is pretty much an hourly occurrence in America these days and he's still surging in the polls.

Far more damaging are the emails where Powell discusses Clinton, her email scandal, her health, and her apparent hatred of President Obama. I suspect each of these suddenly very current topics, and not the slam on Trump, are the real reason why the alleged hacking outfit, DCLeaks.com chose to publish the emails now.
