Depends on the distance and other conditions.
But, typically they do NOT work.

As in permanent long distance? Not a chance. Depending on what you call 'long distance' as well of course. Long distance in The States is entirely different from long distance in my country. But even then permanent long distance is as good as not possible. How can you build something up when you can barely see each other? And sure we got internet and stuff, but that does not make up for spending real time together.
So unless the idea is to get together, meaning the long distance is temporary, no, won't work. And in order to get anywhere, you'd have to at least see each other.
I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but I'm also sure these are few and far between.

Brigadoon

The story of the mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every 100 hudred years. A book, a play, and a movie I think.

Tommy an American Tourist travels to Scotland on a touring holiday and just happens to come across Brigadoon. He enters the village and meets a Lady called Fiona, they fall in love at first sight.
But she explains to him that he either has to stay in the village, or leave for ever, there's no going back whatever he decides.

He has too many commitments in America so he has to leave, he feels guilty about letting too many people down so he returns to the States after a tearful goodbye.

Months go by and he can't get Fiona out of his mind, so he returns to Scotland just to stand at the place where he had seen Brigadoon.

Just then a bright light appears and a bridge, and there he see's Brigadoon and Fiona standing over the bridge, he runs over too her and they hug, and he asks her how, how did she get the village to appear again.

she answers 'I didn't, you did, 'cos when you believe in love, anything is possible, even miracles'.

And they lived happily ever after :)

I remember that movie well...

OP..
They take a lot of work...understanding, commitment...Passion etc.
Things that are in a local relationship and one other thing that sometimes can be hard to keep."Faith".

There has to be a plan of who is relocating in the end.
You can't go in blind that things will work out.
Been in one for almost 17 months now and still going strong.

With Ups and some downs..
Always understanding...

It will only work if both partners are 100% honest with each other... Love isn't enough to make a distance relationship work..it takes commitment and a lot of trust..
