You weren't there to hear my first words
Or everytime I was sick You weren't there when I fell down When I came home with tear-filled eyes Because children are cruel and cannot accept What they cannot understand But you have been there When the world no longer made sense to me His blows would be endless Sometimes I would want to give up Feeling so small and hopeless Your voice so often rang in my ears A soothing sound that always dried my tears And eased the sting that was so often on my cheek It was just seven years ago you walked into my life Daddy is the title I gave you not long after You always asked about my grades Even scolded me for misbehaving And I knew with every birthday Came the promise of a card That meant more to me than any stupid gift It is your words I cherish Last June the time finally came You hugged me tight and suddenly My step fathers villian-like actions No longer mattered You weren't there when I graduated Or turned twenty-one But you were there To teach me lifes most important lesson A fathers love should never hurt To bryan, a friend of my momthers who walked into her life and accepted me as his own when my own father refused he forever changed my life and gave me a reason to keep going I love you Daddy |
