The night is silent
Mists covering the ground
Nary a soul to be seen for miles
She rises up from the cold mists
Swirling and eddying about her as she stands
She looks up at the night sky
Cloudless, moonless, starless night
A cold wind blows across the empty plains
She shivers but not from the cold wind
A shiver of loneliness and longing
She lets loose a howl
Hoping against the odds that one will answer in return
She twitches her ears, shifting them about
Trying to catch even the smallest sounds
Nothing absolutely nothing is out there to be heard
She hangs her head and breaks into a run
Running swiftly across the plains
A lone she wolf
Ever searching for her mate, her pack
She runs through the night never stopping
As the dawn slips over the horizon
She comes to the edge of a deep wood
Pausing now to catch her breath
She sniffs the still air
A scent lingers,a male
A lone male wolf
No pack of his own
She curls beneath a tree
So weary from her long journey
Slipping into a deep sleep....

He stands back in the deep wood
Watching her sleep
Guarding her from any harm
That should come her way
He sniffs the air
Capturing her scent in his mind
This lone she wolf
Chosen for him
So long ago
Before man walked this earth
Predestined mating
She stirs in her slumber
Woofing softly to him
Still he stands back
Watching her and waiting for her to wake
She sleeps deeply so weary from her long journey
He steps a little closer
Watching her sleep
A paw over her nose, tail curled around her
He listens to her breathing
The soft inhalations and exhalations
Stepping ever closer to her
He nuzzles her warm fur
Curling up next to her he waits until she wakes...

She stirs in her sleep
Feeling a body laying next to her
Sensing she has nothing to fear
She sleeps on
He wiggles even closer sharing in her warmth
For so long they have both lain alone
Nothing but their own warmth to share
The day begins to cloud over
Rain drops begin to fall
Beneath the canopy of leaves
They remain warm and dry
Time slips on as it always does
The light of day now fading into the night
She opens her eyes, seeing him now for the first time
She raises her head, he bows his
He touches his nose to hers
Sharing the same breath
Their life mates found in each other
Rising now they turn and run into the deep wood
Running off beginning a life together
