the greatest top 5 qb's in nfl history
1. Dan Marino-Nobody did more with less. always had the worst defenses and running game and STILL churned out close to a .620 career winning percentage, the most game winning drives in the 4th quarter and overtime and not to mention all those passing records. 2. John Elway- Like Marino was saddled with poor supporting casts until late in his career. Was money in the 4th quarter as he had the most all time come from behind victories. 3. Brett Favre- Will break most or all of Marino's records. A true gamer. tough as nails. Easily the best Quarterback of the last 10 years. 4. Peyton Manning-Will probably break the records that Favre will soon break. Could possibly be #1 when it is all said and done. Stay tuned. 5. Johnny Unitas-Was the original gunslinger Obvious omissions Joe Montana-Very good quarterback and was productive but gets way too much credit playing on quite possibly the greatest collection of offensive weapons any quarterback has had. He is not in the Top 5's class. Terry Bradshaw-The most overrated quarterback in NFL history. Playing on a team with Franco Harris, Swann, Stallworth and the Steel Curtain defense. He was obviously the weak link of the team. This is coming from a Steelers fan. |

Davy;
Know much about football? Where's Bobby Layne, Norm Van Brocklin, Bart Starr, Y.A. Title, Fran Tarkington, Warren Moon, Otto Graham, Sonny Jurgensen. I think you need to rename your list "My 5 favorite Quarterbacks in my lifetime". You see, the NFL has been around a few years before you were born. |

Those aren't my picks those were on ESPN.com, talk to the experts about it, I was making a point about your precious cheating QB is all

Did you just use ESPN and experts in the same sentence? Shame on you!
Actually - the discussion of who the best quarterback is totally subjective. On the one hand, there's Joe Montana, often considered to be the greatest quarterback of the modern era. Anyone think he would have been that if he did not play on the same teams as Dwight Clark, Jerry Rice, or Ronnie Lott? How about if he'd played his whole career with Dennis Green as his coach? What about Peyton Manning. Think if he played on the Patriots his whole career he's have anywhere near those many completions - or the touchdown record, with recievers like David Patton - Troy Brown - Reche Caldwell - Jabar Gaffney? I'll tell you this - He'd of won more games, because he would then not have to face Belichick and his defenses. Or how about Stauback and Bradshaw. Think either one of them would have sniffed a chance at the Super Bowl without those defenses they had? Of course not. Defenses win you Super Bowls, and Quarterback stats get you Pro Bowls. Peyton Manning would NOT have a Super Bowl ring if his defense had not picked off Tom Brady in the last seconds of that championship game last year. Nor would he have had the chance if it weren't for the fact that his pro bowl tight end was being covered by a linebacker playing in his first NFL start, and Rodney Harrison in crutches watching from the sideline. So - hey, if Peyton is your favorite quarterback - than say so - or Tom Brady... Just don't confuse "favorite" with "the best". |

So what your saying is brady wins because he has the defensive plays whispered to him in his ears?

Dayv;
He can't have the defensive plays wispered into his ears because the microphone is turned off before the defensive play is even called in. But you knew that right! Didn't you? I mean, you DO watch football, don't you. |

Dayv,
Good list, and thanks for supplying the source. My problem with the list is that it's too "current-heavy". I know it's next to impossible to compare QBs from different eras. Maybe they--or we here at JSH--should do a Top Ten QB "by decade" list. As a Cowboys fan, I really hate to admit this, but in the 70s, Bradshaw would have to be top 3 at least, with a good argument that he should be #1 for the 70s. But hey, it's all subjective. I just feel privileged to have watched a lot of the greats. Sunday's game? I said earlier that I thought Manning was the better QB of the two. Unfortunately, I feel that New England is the better TEAM of the two. And, believe me, I REALLY hate to admit THAT! |
