Is de-activating an account the same as canceling the subscription? If not, what's the difference?

Is de-activating an account the same as canceling the subscription? If not, what's the difference? Canceling your subscription does not affect your profile/account/username in any way. If you deactivate your profile I expect you would still follow through on subscription commitments.
