i was listening to the radio this morning and this question popped up..

are people more rude nowadays or are some people just overly sensitive?

a couple of answers given were as follows:

in defense of free speech, many people say what they want with less regard for how others will feel about it.

I resent that remark and no it's not because my coffee has not kicked in
how dare you insinuate that and I know damn well it was aimed straight at me..man some people got some nerve in this world...grumble

I think at least online
people say things they may not say to your face

that when we were kids, manners and being polite were taught and expected
common courtesy

yes we do have freedom of speech but that does not mean others may not find what you have to say offensive

I belive that anything can be said in polite and not offensive way. Even if someone is rude to me, I dont have to be a sheep and follow their way of expression.

Maybe I am oversensitive whoa

Society changes it's rules over time. Many rules change in deep seated cultures without the population's awareness that change is happening.

In Texas, when I was young, the prevailing culture was respect for others, elders, authority, teachers, etc. The youth of today do not automatically respect others primarily due to peer pressure and media. There is also a change in parenting that has led to children getting "what the parents didn't have" which leads to an entitlement mentality.

In the US, and maybe many other areas as well, is the powerful force of "political correctness" that takes a falsehood and instantly transforms it into a false truth... simply because someone says so. This problem is transforming politics in America and throughout the world. Social media is spreading this trend like wildfire.

An example would be:

Saying "Islam is creating Islamic terror" on social media. The "rude" comments would flow like a fountain from those would be both pro and con to the comment. The "truth" would be debated in rude terms. Political correctness would abound.

People can be nasty even if they aren't "rude" about it. If they're not saying it to your face they're probably saying it behind your back. People that pride themselves on their manners tend to be snobs and a lot of what counts as "politeness" is just another word for BS.

I think it's just about our own personal experiences and inner strength, not necessarily the area where we were raised and grew up. I find that insulting to me as an individual, like a label, to judge someone's character based on their city. I know many wimps in NY who won't stand up for themselves.

I like to think that i'm not rude to people, i like to think i'm polite, friendly and understanding.

on the same page though, i also have opinions on things, and i like to express said opinions at times, problem is, not everyone agrees with me and/or likes the words i choose to use, which then causes offence.

my answer to that? tough **** basically lol

Both men and women have lost the ability to talk to one another- and by doing so there goes the manners along with it. so i agree they talk bigger then they are in the social media and it carries over to the real talk -face to face.
think about your self-
when did you open a door for a stranger or say high to a random person?
or suggest to the check out lady to Have a nice day.
no we all are guilty we are thinking ahead on what we can share on social media when we get home what we just did or what we might of seen. not enough people don't do the little things anymore and a lot less paying it forward goes to the way side!
forget the squat challenge go for the polite challenge!! I double dog dare ya!!

Got it. Note to self, when talking to graduate students please refrain from using the following words and phrases: moron, idiot, stupid, are you f'in kidding, here are some stem cells now go grow a brain, your brain must be starved for oxygen because no one could be this stupid.

Thank you, I think the lab will benefit from this revelation.

are people more rude nowadays or are some people just overly sensitive?

Why can't it be both?

so what do you think?

I think community has less meaning since people aren't really reliant upon it for anything, therefore not directly reliant upon the people they come into contact with on a daily basis.

I think the constant push for individual independence and self expression means greater social conflict.

I think people are more rude "nowadays" and there's nothing wrong with that.
There's no reason not to be except for another individuals own emotional neutrality.
And more likely than not you are not reliant upon them for your food, shelter, clothing, security, they're just competition for jobs, mates, and resources.

Anymore people being "civil" or polite is more of a sign of "you don't matter to me, I don't want you to emotionally react, I just want to finish this up and be on my way as quickly as possible, I don't want conflict, just shut the fck up and give me what I want, I'm being nice, it's a wall to keep you at a distance."

Someone being rude is more honest than someone being polite.

belive that anything can be said in polite and not offensive way.

And if someone isn't communicating naturally and honestly then they have to sit there, ground themselves, focus, and come up with a polite and not offensive way to say something, wasting time, throwing off signs of something else.

Also, as people try to play mental gymnastics in order to say something polite and not offensive the message tends to be lost and miscommunication is more likely.

yes,, there is a bipolar cultural of extremes

people feel free to speak 'truth', in the rudest possible ways

and people also feel 'offended' much easier if someone else's truth isnt in line with their own

someone can be at an unhealthy weight(specific to somethign, weight) or someone can be 'fat'(an insensitive way of saying the same thing basically)

also one can wish another a happy hanukkah, and the other may feel 'offended' just because they dont happen to celebrate hanukkah,, even though its basically no different then hoping someone has a good day and a reflection of the speakers traditions,,,

...so,, to recap, we have become much more RUDE and much more SENSITIVE at teh same time

I work with an International and American guest at a resort.
The answer tot the question are " are people more rude nowadays or are some people just overly sensitive?"

Yes, they are.

It's because we are living in a world, where people are no held accountable for there actions/words.

(Business) are creating more of these type of people.
Guest are allowed to do what ever they want,a guest can start a fight and the employee will be fired for defending themselves.
An employee can be cussed out and the employee has to take it or be fired.

(Parents) My child can do anything he/she wants to do and you cannot stop them, I paid to be here.

The world worships Money,it's our God.

I deal with about 250,000 people a year.
