There is no general rule like that. There may be several alleles (pairs) responsible for a particular look. In an allele, one gene is from the mother and the other from the father. The one which prevails in the child depends on which gene out of the two was dominant and which one was recessive.
If most dominant genes were from the father, the child will resemble the father. |

Yo Jazzman, aren't you a little old to be doing the TamTam thing on the plateau? Just kidding bud Maybe I'm too old for younger people doing that;but it's a good help for my spirit. I don't do it in The Plateau; only one place far from there. I understand what you say. |

In general; girls resemble their fathers and boys resemble their mothers. Shhh! That is supposed to be a secret, which is why the makers of movies, TV shows and TV commercials don't reveal it. |

Says who? And what do you mean? Like physically? Personality wise? WHY??....i have never found a satisfactory and even scientific answer to this
If you mean physically, a made up "scientific" answer could be because the father determines whether or not a kid is a boy or girl. Maybe the X provided by the dad is "stronger" in order to beat out the "y" he also provides and therefore dominates. But if the "y" makes it, and because y's are smaller with fewer genes, it's dominated by the mom's bigger X. If you mean personality wise, kids try really hard to differentiate themselves as individuals. The people they spend most of their developmental life around are their parents. The people they have the most immediately recognizable similarities to are those of the same gender. But people are monkeys. Monkey see, monkey do. We have an entire education system based on it. So, a boy wants to be different than the other boy in the group, to differentiate themselves...so who to emulate? The other boy? Or the girl? Or, maybe because sex is such a huge driving factor for behavior throughout life, even before puberty to some degree, that they act like they are in a romantic relationship as a kid. In successful romantic relationships partners start adopting the traits of the other, of the person they admire and love, of their partner or potential partner. It would be interesting to see what happens in same sex parents. There you go, perfectly "scientific" reasons to explain something that is not true. One thing you will hear a lot of moms do is give credit to the father for looks. Men are extremely insecure and biologically driven to guarantee the DNA of the baby is his. Women naturally stroke the ego of men to reinforce the idea that it actually is his baby. It's fascinating to watch and hear women say things like "the baby looks like it's father!" even when it doesn't. A woman will see similarities that don't exist, a man will see differences that don't exist. Too much, or too little, praise and you might want to get a DNA test. |

All combinations are possible in kids;boys and girls...normal combinations!
The problem starts when a kid strongly resembles his uncle...or someone else in both families. Or a kid strongly resembles YOU in your wife's family female member. Anyway; all combinations are possible;including milkmen or postmen.... all kids are adorable....all. |
