Topic: The Lunacy Of English Language

It's the lunacy of the English language. English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplants, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore it's paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing; grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, two geese. So one moose, two meese? .Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not amend? .If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. You are free to add your own observations about the paradoxes thats called English language

you're thinking too much, uche...
Hahahaha. You never knew the literal meaning of my name in our local dialect is "think". My parent named me "Uchenna" and names have ways of influencing bearers' behaviours and even destinies!!

there you go then. some words carry their meanings, some meanings carry the words. not so foolish. all languages are that way, otherwise...they'd be dead.flowerforyou

Seems the English language is working for us, considering the fact that we are not a third world country.
Provocateur? well, "third world country" definition is relative. It depends on the side of the 'pole' or terminal you started your 'counting'. You are living in the fourth world country, from my axis here

Lol!! Thats exactly the lunacy of this nonsen** known as English language. Now, imagine; "make any sense" make-up, make-believe, make-do, makeover, make-shift, makeweight, make-work, make progress, make love, make move, make off, make out, make it, make a day, etc, etc, etc. Nobody is "making sense" This is simply crazy, crazy, crazy!!!!!

ph - as in photo = f
o - as in women = i
ti - as in nation . = sh........all together = fish

uche --- a fisher of men....

If you have a better language solution than English, feel free to propose it.
I hear good things about Esperanto.

Considering all the ""non-English words that get added into English all the time, even slang, it is no wonder so many people go HUH???

Op there are a few on here that can speak many languages...
I have seen ...
but English should be the primary language in America ...
so many get angry speak the language of the country ...
or at least learn it ... I always use to say what if they could not speak English and needed someone help in some kind of accident ...
what then ... but many still do not care ... I would not want to be in a foreign country and not know how to speak their language... and is very rude to speak in another language when others do not understand what they may be saying ... but another... some do not care ...
but people still get angry when that happens here...

In spite of its alleged lunacy, English stands out to be a beautiful language.

As 'they' say:Sometimes, it takes INSANITY to restore SANITY in an 'insane' world!

Of course even within England you can find words which mean different things from place to place. Yorkshire for example:

"Love"
What it means everywhere else: A profound, passionate, romantic affection for another person.
What it means in Yorkshire: A stranger whose name you don't know.

"Cock"
What it means everywhere else: Cockerel/rooster/male appendage.
What it means in Yorkshire: A stranger whose name you don't know (when you're in Wakefield/Pontefract).

"Posh"
What it means everywhere else: People from privileged backgrounds, usually part of the upper classes.
What it means in Yorkshire: Anyone who pronounces their Ts.

"Pal"
What it means everywhere else: A close friend.
What it means in Yorkshire: Someone you do not like.

"Knob"
What it means everywhere else: A rounded handle on a door, a dial on a piece of electronic equipment.
What it means in Yorkshire: An idiot.

"Pudding"
What it means everywhere else: A sweet dessert, usually eaten after a main course.
What it means in Yorkshire: A savoury bowl-shaped cake, filled with roast beef and gravy.

"Twerk"
What it means everywhere else: A type of dancing in which an individual dances to music in a sexually provocative manner with thrusting hip movements.
What it means in Yorkshire: Where Yorkshire folk go Monday to Friday, 9-5pm.

So now you will all be prepared when holidaying in Yorkshire bigsmile
