Texas Ebola Patient's Possible Contacts Now Reach 100

The circle of people who have come into contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan is rapidly expanding, jumping from 18 to 80 early today and then leaping to 100, according to Texas health officials.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we're starting with this very wide net, including people who have had even brief encounters with the patient or the patient's home," Texas Department of State Health Services spokesperson Carrie Wilson said in a statement. "The number will drop as we focus in on those whose contact may represent a potential risk of infection."

A team of 10 experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have arrived in Dallas and will be helping the local health officials "find, assess, and assist everyone who came into contact" with Duncan, according to a CDC news release
Medical authorities initially said that they were interviewing and monitoring 12 to 18 people, including five children, who had been in contact with Duncan since he arrived Sept. 19. But today that number jumped dramatically, though officials expect tracing protocols to eliminate many.

Thompson said four or five members of Duncan's family are under a "control order" to stay inside their homes.

It's not clear if these four or five people under the control order are the five school age children who were told to stay home from school.
Authorities with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said airline passengers and flight crew members aren’t at risk for Ebola because Duncan wasn’t exhibiting symptoms until days later, but his diagnosis has left residents in Dallas on edge, with scrutiny for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, which allowed the man to leave after he told a nurse he had come from West Africa.

Taste of Africa Comes to Dallas

The magazine Dallas Weekly had a real gaffe last week with one of the most poorly timed covers in memory. Just as the city is cleaning up and sterilizing the places where Ebola victim Thomas Duncan visited after returning from Liberia, the magazine published online their latest issue, featuring the sure to be infamous cover and headline " 'Taste of Africa' Comes To Dallas."

The issue was not only published online, but an email blast was sent out announcing it. That email went out on September 25, and was also tweeted from the Magazine's account.

Obviously the issue was designed and scheduled before news broke of the Dallas Ebola victim. Duncan arrived in Dallas on the Sept. 20 and went to the hospital on the same day the issue went out. He was not diagnosed until five days later. Even so, the timing is amazingly unfortunate and darkly hilarious.

A Travel Ban: Quick, Simple, and RIGHT



Recently, Ebola arrived in the United States when a man named Thomas Duncan stepped off a plane from Liberia. In the short time he has been in this country, he had direct or indirect contact with up to 100 people. Although every effort has been made to contain this case, it brings up the question as to whether a travel ban of flights from West Africa would have a protective effect for U.S. citizens.


The Director of the Center for Disease Control, Dr. Tom Frieden, has stated that ““If we take actions that seem like they may work, they may be the kind of solution to a complex problem that is quick, simple and wrong,”. His reasoning is that isolation of countries that have been ravaged by the epidemic would amount to cruel and unusual punishment. He also implies that needed help for these countries would somehow be hindered by restricting air travel from them. He says that the only way to ensure Americans are safe from the virus is to care for people in the Ebola-ravaged countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia who have it.


His statements are well-meaning but go against sound logic. The restriction of air travel FROM Ebola-ridden nations and the active transport of aid TO them are not mutually exclusive. I applaud our efforts to send the best care to Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. However, a travel ban will decrease the chances of more Ebola cases here. A healthier U.S. means more resources sent elsewhere.




10,000 travelers from West Africa arrive in the U.S. every three months through the hubs of Houston, New York, and Atlanta. Although those entering the country are questioned regarding symptoms and even have their temperature taken, it is simple to bypass these “safeguards”. If you doubt me, put some ice water in your mouth before placing a thermometer in your mouth.




Mr. Duncan was less than forthcoming regarding his exposure to Ebola. While many consider this reprehensible, I can understand why he felt compelled to lie to the authorities in order to escape the epidemic zone. Why wouldn’t others wanting to leave these countries be tempted to do the same?


We have a sophisticated system to deal with infectious disease, but it only works when guidelines are followed. Human error played a part in Mr. Duncan’s story when a health worker failed to communicate his travel history to the physician (note: this allegation is now in dispute). This is a red flag that failed to be hoisted up the flagpole. The fact is: Mistakes are made and they can happen again.


Dr. Frieden states: “The best way to protect ourselves is not to try to seal off these countries but to provide the kinds of services that are needed so that the disease is contained there.

The only way to get to zero risk is to stop it there.” While it must be stopped there, how is exposing the United States to more potential Ebola victims a “zero risk” situation?


It has been suggested that the decision to restrict air travel should come from President Obama himself. Although this restriction is logical, it is difficult for a politician to wage the battle between individual freedoms and public safety. It makes logical sense, therefore, that the recommendation must come from those that lead our major health institutions.

Dr. Frieden and his colleagues must come to the conclusion that will assure our continued good health while expending resources to heal those abroad. The restriction of air travel, even temporarily, is the quick, simple and RIGHT decision here.

Police in Dallas are searching for a homeless man who rode in an ambulance after Thomas Eric Duncan, the Ebola patient currently in critical condition at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

We are working to locate the individual and get him to a comfortable, compassionate place where we can monitor him and care for his every need for the full incubation period, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins explained in an emailed message. I want to emphasize that he is a low risk individual and we are doing this out of precautionary measures.

Although the ambulance was reportedly quarantined after Duncan was delivered to the hospital and its crew told to stay home for 21 days, officials were unable to explain why the homeless man was in the ambulance and why he was released back into the community.

Poor hygiene and substance abuse among the homeless may exacerbate the spread of the disease.

The CDC Ebola fact sheet admits on the very first page that clinics and hospitals are frequently the places of Ebola outbreaks.

The CDC fact sheet also states that the first ever Ebola deaths in 1976 were caused by (close personal contact and by use of contaminated needles and syringes in) hospitals/clinics .

In the second ever Ebola outbreak in 1976 in Sudan killing 151 people, the Disease was spread mainly through close personal contact within hospitals, says the CDC in language which could not be plainer.

McCoy prefers, however, to misrepresent the dry facts concerning Ebola originating in hospitals, which everyone can read online, to excite fear in readers with entertaining theories.

But even in circumstances in which details are hard to come by, certain similarities have emerged, McCoy breathes to create suspense like the best fiction writers. The first contact often occurs in remote, rural communities where a victim handles an infected animal carcass, and things quickly progress downward from there.

His own report quickly spirals downwards by attributing the current Ebola outbreak to deforestation while providing no evidence.

McCoy also hypes the notion that infected animals cause Ebola, again ignoring the CDC fact sheet, which admits that in cases when humans came into contact with infected monkeys in US quarantine facilities, humans did not get sick or die from Ebola.

Local people in West Africa appear to know without having to read the CDC Ebola fact sheet that hospitals and medical staff are spreading Ebola. The Telegraph reports people wielding knives surrounded a Red Cross vehicle in Guinea.

The involvement of hospitals would also explain why Ebola has appeared in this part of Africa for the first time ever and in so many different locations at almost the same time.

Given that the CDC itself admits that hospitals are, in fact, the likely source of any Ebola outbreak, the question arises which specific hospital could be the origin of the current Ebola outbreak?

At the epicentre of the current Ebola epidemic is the Kenema Government Hospital in Sierra Leone, which houses a US a biosecurity level 2 bioweapons research lab with links to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Soros Foundation.

US biodefense scientists have been working at the lab on viral fevers such as Ebola since 2011 at least.

Connecting the dots, it is reasonable to ask for an investigation into whether this particular US bioweapons lab at the geographical epicentre of the current Ebola outbreak actually caused the Ebola outbreak.
